  1. I await the arrival of my lion with much excitement...but a sudden thought occurred to me; Ive nothing for it to pull!

Any suggestions for suitable rolling stock? Ive seen some of the Hornby l&mr offerings and wasn't much impressed.

    Thank you!

    Ah Ha

but he is lucky enough to have one of the later kits judgeing from the pictures which don't have the molded on handrails so that won't be a problem!

But do look out for a preserveriance chassis kit for these kits or as I have found out you can remoter the currant brass overlay plastic chassis you have with markits wheels and a highlevel gearbox for a better running chassis, I got both of mine to run well during the first lockdown one with the plastic/brass chassis (couldn't get hold of a preserveriance brass chassis) and one with the aforementioned brass chassis

Yeah no handrails on this,  I've just put in an order for all the bits needed to fit them.

The motor works and the wheels turn properly now.  The loco is happy in straight lines , not found any corners it likes yet though! Some modification might be required to make that leading wheel pivot or something.

I'm not too concerned with pulling power...I only have two ratio Midland clerestory coaches,  and it will have to share them with my Bachmann 1532 tank engine....

Both the Johnson 4-4-0 and the 2-4-0 are Handsom locos and look splendid in Midland red. For a bit of variety the 4-4-0 was also used by the Midland & Great Northern Railway and would look very nice in a M&GNR mustard yellow

Here's the photos Right way up

    Plus a 2-4-0 1400 class and a 4-4-0 in M&GNR yellow

I don't know which phone you were using, but on my phone I get the same results if the camera notch is on the RHS when taking the photo. Turning the photos around using the on-camera editor gives me the best results. It might work for you too.

I have both the 2-4-0 and 4-4-0 in my stash waiting to be made up. They've been there for 40 years!

    Tried that, still upside down...:unknw_mini:

  5. I was unaware ratio had made loco kits until I bought this on ebay, and I mostly bought it out of curiosity . I've built their coaches  but loco kits in plastic never seemed to be a terribly great idea...but I kinda wanted to see how it worked...

It seems that it does work,  tho one of the coupling rods falls out, and its a bit wonky,  with bits missing.

It was advertised as a Johnson loco, so I suppose its a midland machine but I know not the class number...

So can anyone tell me more about it, and what should it look like when finished? And can I just superglue the pin back into the wheel?

    Thanks!

Edit...OK why are the pics upside down..they're the right  way up on my phone...

Still waiting to receive mine from my local model shop, bet i don't get it for that price though :(

We have an employee discount scheme thing through work which is generally pretty useless...whenever I look for stuff through it it tends to come up more expensive than undiscounted! Sometimes able to save money on Pandora jewellery and cinema tickets...

Somewhat astonished to find the peckett on there and at that price..I suspect it was an error!

  7. A new toy arrived in the post today and its certainly the best Hornby model I own!

It is the centenary limited edition peckett w4 in photographic gray and I'm very impressed with its level of detail, the livery, and its performance. Cant get enough of watching it trundle around my dining table!

    Indeed

I stumbled upon this short 'documentary' of the layout and amazing mid-victorian models of Mike Sharman, well worth a watch:

Great untapped era and huge scope to model, such vibrant and unique designs from countless semi-forgotten companies. I'd love to build an LSWR Shark one day...

    I've seen that, excellent stuff.

There is indeed a huge untapped well of prototypes for models covering the first half of the steam era...I suspect the main reason it remains so is that so few locos from that period lasted long enough to be painted in BR black  , and I suspect Hornby et al find that offputting

  9. So I've just finished a set of 7 of the ratio 4 wheelers intended to be if no particular prototype. Choc brown with gold lining and lnwr lettering cos that's what I had lying around....

I hadn't heard about the genesis coaches till I was half done...and now the transfers are drying and Hornby do this to me...

so long story short I'm getting a set of each.

more victorian tank engines to pull them please!

  10. Thought I'd better mention the outcome of the problems rather than leave the thread hanging with no conclusion...

The problematic "p" now runs perfectly!

I found my wheel back to back gauge and when I checked all the 3 axels were out of gauge by different amounts...one was too narrow,  two were too wide. Not by much, and I suspect at least one wheel wasn't square on the axle.  This all amounted to putting the loco in a perpetual right hand turn.  The gauge realigned the wheel sets, I put the whole thing back together, and of it went, smooth as you like.

    Thank you !

I'm guessing the emails will be sent either tomorrow or Monday, either way, if I don't get the regular ones I'm gonna finally buy myself the international collector club membership and pay for the SDJR Blue one.

Wait, there's a blue sdjr one?

  12. I'd love a C class for that reason alone...bit pricey tho, made do with a P.

Equally, though, few will want/need more than one of these in MR red.

    John

But they almost certainly dont have one already...

Evidence suggests otherwise - see the comments earlier about the 4F being an extremely slow seller.

The 1P being in a more attractive livery is less affected by this problem, although the prospect of suitable coaching stock from Hattons will have also helped.

Well...its a black 060 tender engine.  And thats an accurate description of 85% of all steam locos.

    And there's two types of black 060 engines;

There's the early ones with smaller boilers and bigger domes, and later ones with bigger boilers and very small domes or a bucket. And that's basically it...

I mean, how many near identical engines does anyone really need?
