Through our promoting of the hobby, we'd like to think of ourselves as forward-thinking, always seeking new and improved techniques that can be shared among readers. That said, nothing quite highlights progress like a retrospective look at one of the first model railways set in a landscape. This month, we look at John Ahern's 'Madder Valley'.
Dating from the 1940s and housed at Pendon Museum in Oxfordshire, the model is a showcase of ingenious modelling techniques, at a time when products were scarce, and scratch-building and re-purposing was common-place, a contrast to the methods used to construct the other excellent layouts featured this issue: 'Newton Grove' and 'Lydham Heath'.
Printed copies are available in stores from December 3, or download your digital edition of the magazine instantly on Friday November 27, from www.pocketmags.com/BRM
Don't forget, we've some excellent subscription deals on our website world-of-railways.co.uk, so if a digital edition isn't for you, at least you're guaranteed a copy of the magazine through your letterbox every four weeks!
In this episode of BRM TV:

Constructing and painting a Scale Model Scenery fence kit
Enhancing a wagon with accessories from Slater's Plastikard
Layouts
'Lydham Heath' (S). A long-time admirer finally became custodian of this layout, changing little but for sympathetic improvements to its presentation...
Madder Valley (16.5mm). The story of the model railway in a landscape can be traced back to this heritage creation by John Ahern in the 1940s.
'Newton Grove' (O). Jonathan Newton discovered three of his favourite hobbies rolled into one, with the building of this North-West MPD tribute.
