  1. Looking good. The cardboard idea using real stock is an excellent way to check for clearances. The sector plate can be as simple as a single piece of thin ply, or aluminium sheet with the tracks glued on, and using a domestic brass sliding bolt to align and feed power. O gauge has enough size to get away with using small brass bolt.

I have been underneath the layout doing some of the wiring and working out the pin-outs of the 25d connectors back to the control panel, which is housed in a rather good Taylor's port box.

    Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay was very well received at the Pickering show resulting in some further bookings and enquiries for next year. It worked faultlessly all weekend, running on the 12volt sealed battery. Maggie did a sterling job as "second man".
  4. This weeks task is to make the two sides of the platform ramp. I will probably make these as a top capping and a sloping wall section, and glue them together. Then my plaster casting is over, at least for this layout! I do have a mould to make 5" high 4" wide arched retaining walls, for my own layout, so I might experiment with that.
  5. The master for them was made from brick plastic sheet glued to thin mdf and stepped out at the top. This was then coated in thin petroleum jelly so a mould could me made using silicone bath sealant. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing you how to do it. The plaster casts were made 9 1/2" long to allow the ends to be filed to fit. They were then glued to wooden batterns using no more nails type adhesives.

    Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay has been erected in the garage to allow testing prior to the Pickering show on the 17/18 Aug. No problems found yet. I now need to teach Maggie how to drive the thing.
  7. Maggie will get her conservatory table back soon!
  8. Much plaster casting has taken place! Most are ok, the broken bits will be used as fill in pieces.
  9. Glad to read that you are back to doing some modelling now it has warmed up a bit. I really must catch up with you! Best wishes, Kevin.
  10. The layout worked perfectly all weekend and was such a pleasure to operate. A big thanks to my Brother in law, Peter who helped operate the two layouts. It was great to be able to hand the controller over the barrier to interested adults, and young children and let them run it. The look of joy in their eyes was worth seeing. Perhaps there is hope for railway modelling in the future.
  11. It worked nearly faultlessly until a transistor in the controller started to have a mind of its own. The transistor has been replaced by a much bigger one!
  12. Nice to see J and the G5 running on Spital Bridge. I believe the layout worked well for the whole weekend and members enjoyed running it. I am currently working on casting platform sides in both finishing plaster, with PVA, and plaster of Paris to see which is more acceptable.
  13. The layout has been spruced up, and will be at the Goathland Show in July.

Finally got around to posting the photos of the traverser alignment. This is done by a 1/8th inch steel rod, inserted vertically through a piece of copper clad into a brass tube set vertically into the end framing. There will be wiping contacts on the copper clad, so aligning the track completes the electrical circuit.

Whilst away on holiday I started work on the Collett bow ended coach kits. One body is now complete. Today I finished laying the plain track, so there is only the traverser to do now.

    Badgers Bottom

Today I have been laying and aligning a lot of the plain track, so things are looking much neater.

I have now added the run around loop and checked the clearances with the carriages. All appears well.

I have now added the run around loop and checked the clearances with the carriages. All appears well. I am glad I have a bench grinder for all the point blades. I finished them off using a oil stone for a smooth finish.

Back on track now , I have built all seven points and I now need to add the plain track in be tween.

    Badgers Bottom

I have managed to get a few hours in the shed, and two of the seven points now have rails soldered on, and stock run through the crossings - all seems OK. I may get back in there today and make point number three! There will be cosmetic chairs added to the rail sides once they are all built and working correctly.

The dark side now has the first rail soldered to the sleepers on the first point, so progress has started.
  22. Pawson's now has servo operated points which means I can hand the controller to members of the public to operate the layout and tie the yard in knots!
