An option not available to Oliver Cromwell unfortunately.

  2. Helldivers 2 continues to entertain... with the right co-op team. But whilst half the current in-game campaign sees the player battling insectoid aliens Starship Troopers style, the glitches and bugs within the code also provide occasional surprises:

  3. I was tinkering with digital cars at the weekend, a lot less hassle.

Tweaked someone's Phil Ward Merc and Anglicised it, liked the Monroe Shocks one he ran in Oz but thought the Nokia sponsored one was probably more suitable for the UK premier saloon car event.

There's no UK circuits in Gran Turismo 7 to place cars for photos unfortunately, but I plonked my (freelance) Dulux shod E36 and a tasty Rouse Sierra with it for a passable early 90s neverwasser:

Shame Mercedes didn't enter the BTCC.

Apologies, I've realised my error. Neither prime movers are coupled and there's no stock between...so merely marshalled line astern!

  5. I'm aware this thread was probably intended as a more TV viewing focused discussion, but as finding the cinema driven alternative may take time, can I just recommend Dune Pt2 for your viewing pleasure.

A film cinema was made for, I've not felt as giddy walking out of the movies since SW: Rogue One. Superb.

Just acquired this gem, Change We Must by Jon Anderson.  Superb, surely one of his best?

Oooh, tough call! I adore Anderson's singing. From 'Wonderous Stories' & 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' with Yes to 'I Hear You Now' with Vangelis, I'd be hard pressed to say any were better than another.

  7. Some more Helldivers gameplay. Given the technical issues the game has had it's rather inevitable that matches with noobs & veterans are kinda unbalanced. The former with little knowledge of mission structure. Anyway, this fella got off lightly with a melee swipe, I've shot a guy for not following orders!

Cats will never use a catflap if they know you'll open the door for them sooner or later!

... and why should they. However in Mia's opinion, "I wanna go outdoors, but I want you to open the door and preferably keep me company while I'm out, just in the background mind you".

Although having said that, her options for egress are via an 'ooman operated door or a two stage jump up and then same down exiting via the downstairs open window. So in a way I can't blame her, she's lazy not stupid!

The V car floor pan was definitely a good handler,  been part of some great cars.

    I have had 5.

Police cars often used them, the Holdens were v cars. Basically a German designed floor pan with a souped up small block Chevvy engine, via AFAIR TWR.

Indeed, it took a European influence to make a decent handling motor.

  10. Here's a bit from Helldivers 2, in case you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. My video isn't indicative of why the game is popular, that comes from the fun had from having three other players on mission. Online issues still plague the title though so I occasionally will play solo:

Should it be free to play? I don't think so. Outrider's isn't f2p and offers nowhere near the enjoyment Helldivers 2 does. Not necessarily through mission structure but with the tools available for how you go about it.

Additionally, Helldivers properly tips it's cap to its influences. Satirical pokes at Bush Jnr chiefly, but Starship Troopers, Judge Dredd, Star Wars, Aliens, Terminator references? Oh yeah...in spades.

  11. I'm with the consensus that "they" are fools. Unless a kitten has been rediculously human influenced, to not groom itself, leave well alone. They don't need bathing.

If the cats are smelly then they've found somewhere to kip that has an aroma. Deal with that!

Ford are pushing the F-150 here (No 1 selling car in the US). I spotted one in Bunnings yesterday so compared it with  the ute (based on the Omega-sized  Commodore, which was the No 1 selling car in Australia back in the day....).

For all that extra hardware,  the tray (tub) of the Ford  is just 81mm longer than the Holden.

Here's a question - his afternoon shows on Radio 1 then Radio 2, while being similar, were also quite different to each other. Which was the best?

I think he really missed the mark trying to be cool and trendy with the 'Afternoon Posse' and the complete bellend "Diamond Geezer". The entire Mr. Spoons bit was literally encouraging assault in the workplace and I'm amazed no-one sued the Beeb to high heaven and back. Also don't care if I never hear Janey Lee Grace ever again either.

But I loved Sid the Manager, David Bowie doing the weather and Mick Jagger (Phil Cornwall?) popping round. Was tickled if during a Factoid, a date of birth or something was like 1849 and Steve or his oppo would say "around ten to seven then".

Wright did have a bit of flak directed at him by John Peel, but I think John eventually recognised Steve had his place in the radio landscape.

From the Afternoon to the Afterlife, RIP.

  14. I'm kinda kicking my heels at the moment awaiting Rise of the Ronin a month from now. In the meantime whilst actual reviews for Helldivers II have been absent from my regular gamesites of choice, it's had gushing recommendations from the general public via the comments sections. Third person loot shooter, but with a purchase entry required, I'm nonetheless interested.

In other news, Steelrising was added to my subscription available library and as it was on my wishlist I had a go at the weekend. I was prepared to ditch it having got fed up with the first boss. But rather than difficulty levels it has assistance sliders. Tweaking those gave me the opportunity to lessen the frustration of getting my ass handed to me regularly and I think it's a title I'll stay with. Mortal Shell was similar in concept (Metroidvania) but stupid hard to play. The Jedi games I feel have the concept bob on.

Ah, the incomparable Joni. I came to her music through hearing Big Yellow Taxi on the radio, and have adored her ever since. The Circle Game is one of her very best, although my personal favourite is Chelsea Morning - no matter what mood I’m in, be it happy, sad, or any point in between, that song is guaranteed to lift me.

+1 for Chelsea Morning, cracking tune.

I still find it rather humbling that as much as one likes to think they know an art form, on a random day a radio station will occasionally play something you were unaware of and it can excite you and reinvigorate a passion for it.

On Saturday I and about 4000 others watched Blade Runner with the magnificent Vangelis soundtrack performed live. This was only the second time I have seen and heard a Yamaha CS-80 in the flesh (the first was for Jeff Wayne's War of The Worlds on stage in 2007).

How did that work technically David? They managed to isolate the music soundtrack from the dialogue and sound effects etc I'm guessing?

Hmm... not looking quite as 'Executive' these days is it? I remember thinking when radio aerials embedded in the window pillar was a new thing, as opposed to straight up out of a wing, how cutting edge it seemed!

  18. I'm not as au fait with railway modelling these days but does the OP mean the cost of the existing products has gone up...or it (justifiably imo) costs more to purchase the ultra high fidelity products being brought to market?

    There's a significant difference.

There's a vocal mob decrying the fact computer games are regularly going to be sold for an RRP of £70...well boo-hoo.

I've still got the stickers on game boxes from twenty years ago with £45 pricing. Those games look pretty awful these days and their production budgets were a fraction of what it costs to generate games today.

I'll concur though that a hike in...for arguments sake... a mortgage, with no significant increase in the value of the property, or, petrol costs more because a bunch of people have decided to drill less oil are rather apparent indicators that rampant capitalism does indeed suck ass.

If I put a bus UNDER Ancaster Road bridge is that a negative cliche?  If I then put on on top of the London Road bridge will they cancel each other out?

Seriously though the bus pictures are really useful for what should be on the layout, but are any of them available RTR as such? Buses are not my area of knowledge at all.

I don't think my copies of the Ipswich Transport Society journal go back as far as '85 Andi so can't help you there, if you're still in touch with any ITS members maybe they could loan you copies. Failing that perhaps the museum could assist?

  20. I'd prefer for personal reasons to stay out of such discussions, my religious and geopolitical opinions are both inconsequential (in the grand scheme of things) and beyond the rules of this forum. However I did find this most erudite description of the war hawks ruleset rather enlightening:

"War requires the redefinition of one’s targets as not worthy of moral regard because our goals are usually to do immoral things to them, often for immoral reasons. We generally know right from wrong with regards to how “people” are treated, so we create categories of “non-people” whom we are allowed to commit crimes against. In turn, we have to free ourselves from the burden of self-reflection by turning all of our prior victims into villains we conquered and applying the same morality retroactively to them.

You don’t build up a military as large as the next 15 militaries combined because you’re defending yourself any more than you build a police force so large it qualifies as the third largest military on the planet. You do so because no one trusts YOU.

Cowboys and Indians, Birth of a Nation, Fu Manchu. We need villains to compare our villainy to, even if we have to invent them. Even if we have to forget how often we go back to the same well.

It was land, it was labor, it was gold. Hell, it still is. But with the industrial revolution and later the rise of petroleum resources, of course some random olive farmer or shepherd is going to be the villain of your next cultural narrative and stay there until there’s nothing left that you want to take from them.

Or maybe it’ll be water next. Since we’re being topical, consider why Israel has an illegal standing military in the West Bank despite conflict between the two ending almost 20 years ago. Consider why Israeli settlers kill hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank on Palestinian land each year. Consider how the West Bank gets more rainfall (615 mm) than London (585 mm) but Palestinians in the West Bank get rationed 20 liters a day while Israeli settlers in the West Bank use 487 liters a day and Israelis in actual Israel use 165 liters a day.

Consider how many cultural narratives are necessary to maintain this.

It’s not about people being mean to people who eat strange foods or look different. It’s about creating evil people who are born evil so that your own evil gets seen as justice."
