I am sure I will soon be corrected but I thought the smart meter connected by mobile phone network frequencies not long wave. The smart gas meter transmits a signal (like WiFi frequency) to the smart electricity meter which sends a signal via the mobile phone network to your energy provider. The electricity meter also sends a signal to the in house display. A smart meter may not work if there is no mobile phone service locally. The man who fitted ours was concerned not about the electricity meter but he thought the gas meter was too far away. However it all connected nicely.

According to the engineer who tried to fit our smart meter, they used to use mobile phone signals, but don’t any more.  Had it been a mobile signal, he might still have had problems, as some mobile providers don’t work reliably here.  From what the guy told me, the gas smart meter relies on the electric one having been fitted first, as it appears to piggyback onto the electric one.

Bear did mean to mention that an alternative to filling screw holes before re-drilling is to coat a matchstick (or even two - perhaps tapering them slightly if needed) in wood glue and tap into the hole.  Leave until dry and then re-drill.  Often easier than trying to fill a hole all the way to the bottom.

I have used the matchstick in a screw hole quite a few times if a screw doesn’t ‘bite’, but never thought about adding the wood glue.  I will remember that for future use.

Looks like a fine day so far, but is forecast to be cold and very windy.  I don’t think I will be going far, and may have to resort to decorating today.  The spare bedroom ceiling needs to be done now that all the prep work has been done.

It was cold, windy and grey at the House of Fun. No-one seemed to be celebrating Meet-up Moan-day. Numbers travelling were much the same as the past few weeks.

    But now .....

  4. Evening all,

Two amazing sports games today, firstly England beating India in the second one day cricket international with superb innings from Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.  Then Scotland beating France in the last match of the rugby Six Nations, meaning that Wales win the title.  The Scots really dug deep and showed a lot of character to win tonight.  A very entertaining evenings viewing!

  5. May I add my congratulations to Dom and Elise.  We are now just about 3 weeks away from becoming grandparents for the first time.  When we will get to see the grandchild is another matter though.

Today Mrs G got her jab, although it involved a 90 mile round trip to get it.  As she hadn’t been contacted by the GP surgery, we got her appointment at the nearest mass Vaccination centre, which was in Ulverston in the south of the county.  It was just as well we allowed plenty of time to get there, as there was a road closure, with a diversion which sent us down a rutted pot-holed farm track which was ludicrous.  If they had erected closure notices 2 miles earlier, we could have diverted via a road with actual tarmac!!  Then we seemed to get held up by horse boxes, tractors etc.  The vaccination centre was at the Sports Club for GlaxoSmithKline, which was a trip down memory lane for me as I worked at their Ulverston site for 4 years, just over 40 years ago.  Most of the buildings I had worked in are now demolished, with onLy one recognisable building still on the site.  We then went for a short walk alongside the Ulverston Canal, on a path which I had never used all those years ago.

On our return journey, we saw a “convoy” of at least 12 motor bikers out for their “essential” Sunday afternoon outing.  I know we are coming to the end of lockdown, but this was a complete joke!  Despite all the hassle getting there and back, it was rather nice just to get away for half a day.  Being nice and sunny certainly helped.
