That's great to know it's open again MZP. Thanks. Beer straight from the barrel. I remember the garden. The last time I was in it, the seats and tables were battling with nature and had almost lost.

Downhill... or uphill to the Square and Compass?   My round!

  2. Lovely club that; very friendly and good for conversation not to mention good value. Does anyone know if anything is happening with "The Fox" pub in Corfe? It would be a shame for that old time warp place to vanish.

  3. There's some interesting drag racing videos on Youtube of the Tesla against production muscle cars like the Challanger Hellcat and the Demon (about 700hp and 840 respectively). I don't know what the modern Ford and Chevy cars are but they must be high output. The Tesla can beat them over the 1/4 mile, putting in 10.5 - 11.0 seconds. The camera on the Tesla is pointing backwards!. There's all that row (music) from the muscle car, then it's as though it's stalled and everything goes quiet on camera as the EV blasts off. The muscle car then reels it in and at best draws at the finish. Over a 1/2 mile it would be a different story as the ICE car would have passed the EV like a ballistic missile. Quite probably the ICE cars would wipe out the Tesla is any road/track situation except a start off.

It'll be an interesting future for cars. It's doesn't seem like an environmental cause but a willy measuring contest.

Aye, the Swan is good. First place to be drunk dry of draught beer (OBB) during Freshers Week too...

From memory, there was the Adam and Eve in Laygate, South Shields that was a Sam Smiths pub, and I remember finding one in Jarrow, but can't remember the name. I wonder if it's still there?

There's a nice old one in North Shields too, not too far from the ferries; maybe the most northerly of Sams pubs.

I am partial to a pint of OBB and when I am in  London, I always try and fit a visit to the Princess Louise in Holborn in. It has been restored to its Victorian splendour with some lovely etched glass screens and as a  bonus the beer prices are great

Certainly, the Princess Louise is a stunning pub. There's the Cittie of York further up Holburn which is also a Sammies pub of unique splendour. The Cheshire cheese near Fleet street?. I can't think of any more in London except the Earl of Lonsdale which is lovely but has/had no hand pulled last visit.

  6. Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter: a great ale from oak casks and the pubs are usually original multi- roomers. Once, I was keen to introduce a Russian pal to this beer but he'd already discovered it and told me the best beer (Sammies) is in the best pubs.

  7. I bought it second hand too without the DLC, finding out later what was missing. I really liked the game so ended up getting a new copy with Horizons included.

I'd play the copy you have and see if you're likely to get into it before buying the DLC.  I didn't like "No Man's Sky"  after playing Elite and didn't give it a proper chance.  Elite is just the Daddy; the ships and atmosphere and loneliness are just so cool whereas No Mans's Sky seemed cartoony to me.

Aside form the planet landings which you'll want to do (visit ancient alien sites/more mission opportunities/exploration and mining in a buggy) there's also (I think!) the "engineers" aspect of the game which means visiting these scientists and their installations to improve your ship. All the landable planets are pretty much rocks with no atmosphere and have bases rather than civilised developed cities but they add loads to the game.

You might want to check out "Obsidian Ant"'s You Tube channel and get a taste of it.

  8. You need to re-plot your route (should be possible from your mission board), taking in systems that are closer together as your ship (Sidewinder?) has a crappy jump range. You can upgrade your ship to jump further but this needs loads of money which you won't have.

Do you have the Horizons version?. Without this you can't land on planets and explore which sucks ass.

One tip is to make one system your base and do several missions at once to nearby systems and build up reputation with those factors so they offer you more money for further missions. Another tip is to get a cheap ship like the Cobra and get some extra cargo bays so you can take on missions with better pay. You'll notice the same missions coming up everytime you visit your home system. Try and take missions for either the Federation or Empire as that will rank you up with them and you will eventually get permits to systems like Sol and chances to buy much better ships than are available normally. Also consider joining a community goal and just fulfilling the bare minimum to get money fast.

Be prepared for endless repetition, seemingly pointless missions and over complications with everything, just for the sake of making your life difficult. It took me about a year and a half to buy and max the best ship in the game and get the ratings up.

You'll need a laptop at the side of you just to find out what to do and how to do it as there's no instructons with the game and it is mega complicated. Crazy!

Saying all that, it's still my dream game and I' was a fan since '84. They keep doing updates to it and one of the recent ones made it necessary to learn more complications so I've not played it for a bit.  It's a game for life to the right person.....or until they pull the servers.....which puts me off putting more years into it.

  9. Don't know if it's been mentioned but there was an interesting service in the late 80's from Kings X to Bradford where a 47/4 dragged the train from Leeds to Forster Square before that section was electrified which would make an interesting model. I think it was plugged as some kind of Pullman service.

I can remember a lot of nose first running in the early days and saw one hauling mk1's in IC livery; probably  a charter.

  10. I can remember one of their gigs in the 90's where the crowd got so wild that a lot of people at the front got squashed and trampled. The plug got pulled until the medics removed all the casualties and when the stage lights came back on Keith shouted out " This one's going out to all the crushed people......BREATHE!".

  11. Thanks Rich, I'll take a look at the Wills sheet; I'd forgotten about Wills.

Gibbo. Ah yes, I can see now that it's Trix. It's hard to believe they are so old and still very nice. I had no luck sourcing a shell but I'm sure the Bach 85 will make a nice 81.

My 86's and 87's are Hornby and Lima respectively but use a Heljan chassis from the 26 and as such retain the short bogie frames (I never knew they were too short until I read about it on here) Maybe one day I'll fit Hymek bogies and lengthen them but I can't see that happening really.

  12. I'm really gonna have to have a look through your threads Gibbo, when I get some time; seems we have similar interests......old electrics/cartic-4 etc.

The 84 started life as a Triang AL1 did it? It looks smart so far. I'd like to build an MTK 83 if I can find one. Bashing about an old Triang would be great but aren't the bogies more like a Class 82?

I'm cutting into my Bachy 85 at the moment;  removing the grilles with a razor-saw........tricky work!
