  1. Thanks for posting the links to the hydraulic pictures - these are perfect for reference material for my' layout that never leaves home/layout of a lifetime' Liskwithiel Road.

  2. Just doing a quick detailing job on a Lima Western, D1071 without headcode clips.

Benefits of working on the Lima ones is that they cost no more than £30 and you can get the bodies off:)  They are so basic and have many errors faults and a rubbish motor that actually works well if looked after but still make the Heljan and Dapol ones look perfect.

Would post some photos but don't know how:(

    Don't be put off !!

Remember - you haven't heard from the overwhelming silent majority who are perfectly happy with their Westerns and other Dapol models - amongst whom I number myself.

Just because there's a lot of 'noise' doesn't mean that the majority of models are defective - far from it!

Have a head count of those posters who report problems, and then compare that to the hundreds / thousands of models sold.

    Regards,

    John Isherwood.

John, I was going to post something very similar. I have three Dapol Westerns and also three Class 22s. All run (and look) perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to buy further Dapol hydraulics should the occasion arise.

I'm sure the cause of the lighting problems has already been mentioned in this thread, (But I'm not trawling 110 pages to find it)

The issue is with the lighting board.   There is no overload protection, so if a short circuit occurs, the integrated circuit on the board starts to overheat.

I experienced this on the layout in the shop - the loco derailed and the leading bogie crossed the rails, causing a short.  Bang go the lights.

This is a consistent and repeatable problem.

The LEDs themselves are not affected as they are protected by their resistors, but the Integrated circuit that controlls them, is ruined.

Putting a DCC chip in fixes the issue (Which is why no-one running DCC has a problem) so you should have no concerns buying the model if you are running digital.

But, the circuitry should be right in the first place.

I did write to Dapol about this, when Richard was experiencing his problems, suggesting what I believed the cause of the problem to be, but got no response.

I'm having similar silly problms with the lighting in their N gauge HSTs (Works fine on DCC but not on analogue)

The model might look fabulous (and it does) and may be the most accurate ever, but it can only be a great model if the whole package (Electrics and mechanicals included) inside and out, is of the same quality.

Thank you for your reassurances.  Perhaps I am just getting impatient as it will be almost 12 months when D1062 is delivered that I placed my order.

  4. While I am on line.  Has anyone any news when D1062 will be hitting the UK.  It's August soon and we were expecting a July arrival date.  Must be on a very slow boat from China.  Lets hope it doesn't end up washed up on a Devon beach

  5. Mmmmmm.  Starting to get a bit itchy about my WLA special of D1062 with all these horrror stories of duff models.  I am thinking that I may keep it in it sbox without running and then send of to DCC supplies to get a sound chip fitted and the bugs ironed out befoire I try and run it at all.

It's hard to think now how excited we all were when that first post was put on the forum.  Mind you we were all a lot younger then :)

  6. Hi Dave,

Can you report if the WLA special of D1062 is wending its way westward yet?  I am getting rather excited noiw about my 2012 Christmas present   :sungum:  :sungum:  :sungum:  :sungum:

  7. Perhaps 'Steam' at Swindon undersold the models, in that if they had been £20 more then fewer dealers would have bought them. But I cannot blame Dapol for allowing a virtually unused livery to be sold off too soon as an unrepeatable 'special edition'; they had no idea how the model would be received. Indeed very soon after the model was launched, someone posted here to the effect the headcodes have got to go; the market is fickle.

I wanted to buy a Western Enterprise too, but failed to secure an order. I have given up looking (I saw one go on eBay for £280+); but if I really wanted one now (I am much too young to remember the real thing), I would buy a less popular colour, and some paint, and have a go. Treat it as an excuse to do a bit of modelling, and enjoy it afterwards as a personal best effort; or pay someone to respray it. Even if paying someone costs a bit more than the eBay dealer, it will be more satisfying in the long run.

    Absolutely.

  8. Now reduced to £249.99.

Could be there a good long while..... Reminds me of the story about the bloke who bought pretty much an entire batch of NRM/Bachmann ProtoDeltics in the hope of turning a quick profit / doubling his money. I wonder if he's still stuck with them?

Well overpriced even for a 'Limited' Edition especially when there are Heljan versions available on eBay for less than a ton.

  9. It's mid winter here.  The evening temperature is slightly less than one complete degree.  The heating is on full.

I'm worried that the Macallan (which here is 14 year old Oban) might evaporate between sips.   :O

It's also not a great idea to play with adhesives and solvents in such an environment.  I'll wait until I can open the window in comfort.   ;)

The temperature here in Hythe on the Kentish Riviera is not much better and we had to resort to the single malt to warm our bones last night.

  10. My understanding is that the Western Locomotive Association have not sold out of their 1062 Western Courier limited edition which is in maroon with small yellow warning panel.  I don't believe they have received there order yet, and they are asking a high price compared with the standard loco's, but if you don't want to wait....

It's not that expensive when you consider that all of the detailing parts including the roof lifting eyes and the nameplates are fitted.  ALSO I understand that profits from the sale of D1062 will go to the WLA and not a retailers pocket.

  11. Nowt wrong with them Richard! all looking good and on a really nice layout from what I can see.

I've just been to the local MR shop but they still haven't got any Dapol ones in. As I haven't seen one for real yet I can't say for sure, but my plan is to buy one to add to my collection, the rest of my Heljan's are staying.

Chances are that only a few select retailers still have any.  There are a few on eBay at reasonable prices (D1000 excluded which are up for silly money)

  12. I have 3 Heljan Westerns and still collecting.  I also have 12 Lima Westerns and no plans to replace them all with the Dapol model.  I do have the WLA Ltd Ed version of D1062 on order to support the WLA.  In a few years time AN Other will introduce a model of the ultimate Western and there will be a surge of Dapol models cascading down through the ranks just as we are seeing the Heljan models now.

  13. Nice one Phil ;O)

Looking at that reminds me of something I meant to mention earlier - on these blue beasties the yellow paint extends down just a bit too far compared to the real McCoys, the raised lip above the buffer beam should be blue, with the dividing line between the blue and yellow areas running parallel with it right to the cab corners - the same thing would apply to the maroon Westerns which carried full yellow ends for a while. (Only a minor niggle but easily corrected or disguised with a bit of weathering ;) ).

No, the deco approval model hasn't been approved yet, so late may I think.

    Cheers

    Dave

    Thanks Dave,

Really looking forward to this one having placed my order with the WLA before Christmas.  Will the livery issues noted above that affects the colour of the buffer beam beading below the yellow warning panels be addressed.

  14. They're Parkside OWV kits (Ref PC02A), unless I'm much mistaken: you can get some variety by using the LMS underframe with the different springs (available as part of the Vanwide kit). Cambridge Custom Transfers does markings for both the pre-Nationalisation and BR wagons transferred to these duties (BL25 and BL26) If you're modelling post-TOPS, then the wagon code remains OWV, though I did see one or two lettered 'UCV' when I lived and worked around Stoke. As usual, Paul Bartlett's site has loads of useful photos.

Thank you Fat Controller.  I have to say the Bachmann offering is lacking and the chassis needs updating to Blue Riband status.  Although I have quite a few of the latter it would be good to introduce a little variety.

  15. Hello Western Brainstrust !!  Just received some Silver Fox name-plates `WESTERN EXPLORER` to christen my fab groovy 60`s green liveried Dapol Western . The name-plates are correctly RED-background , but the builders-plates are BLACK -ground . Havent seen any photos to substantiate the builders plates being in black at this time . Did they emerge from Swindon works as this ?? Perhaps someone has WESTERN INTELLIGENCE on this one!!attachicon.gifDSCN1025.JPG

'The Heyday of the Westerns' by Derek Huntriss (Ian Allan) has a colour picture of D1035 Western Yeoman at Leamington Spa on 25 August 1962 which clearly shows the builders plates with a red background. This is a great book for the modeller and thoroughly recommended for checking on just such details.

I recently detailed a couple of green Lima westerns and found the same thing  red name and number plates and black builders plates. To get over the problem I painted the moulded on plates red as the etched ones were too big to fit in the location anyway.

DOH!  I have just noticed that the front cover of the very same book has a very clear picture of '35 near Aynho Junct on 29 August 1962.

  16. 071, thank you for posting the pictures of 'the blue one'.  Isn't she lovely.

One thing I don't understand though is the picture of a crossed out wheelie bin moulded on the underside of the fuel tanks.  I mean. who would throw one of these away?  Only an insane fool :nono:
