Was that little turntable a sort of sector plate that they can use to put one bogie at a time onto the correct siding? Jamie
Guest
Was that little turntable a sort of sector plate that they can use to put one bogie at a time onto the correct siding? Mike's pictures bring back memories. I haven't been there for about 22-23 years but I was sure I recognized the picture showing the little turntable. The location is Bunyola, a little bit inland and we went there a couple of times on the tram. If you look at the image I shamelessly nicked from Google Streetview, the stub track off the turntable doesn't go far... just to a little loading dock that they can put a flat wagon up against. I guess it's for getting plant/materials onto the line for maintenance.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted May 3, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2017 I'd agree with Pete, the flat wagon was the only piece of freight stock I saw, the only other non passemger item was the tamper jobby in the lean to effort. Guest
Nice pictures Ray. I've always found the Spanish EMUs strangely fascinating and that's a nice shot of the 252 + Talgo.

Glover
I love the photos taken around Barcelona, especially around Sitges and Vilanova I la Geltru. My wife and I had two apartments ( not at the same time!) for about 15 years around this area. The first was in the hills behind Sitges ( Pete 75C is correct: property prices are very expensive in this somewhat bohemian town) while the second was closer to Vilanova. In fact, part of the development can just be seen top right in Frutigen's second photo in post number 11. The photos below, which are photos of photos, were taken at Sitges station in April 1999. Both locos are (were?) preserved at the railway museum in Vilanova. The steam loco (properly adorned with Barcelona FC flags!) is I understand a replica, possibly built in 1948 to celebrate the centenary of the building of the first railway line in Spain, between Barcelona and Mataro, to the north-east of the city. I remember the electric loco making the lightly laid siding groan under its weight! Sorry!! Photos are up side down! Glover
EddieB
Yes, the steam loco "MATARO" is a working replica of an original Jones & Potts loco of 1848, built at the RENFE La Maquinista workshops to commemorate its centenary (649/1948).

long island jack
Change of tack, had a week in Palma last year, and managed to photo a bit of street running. main two seen all week was #1 and #2, #3 came the last day we were there no sign of #4. I had worked out in advance the working timetable, so had a rough idea when there would be one due while walking around doing the tourist bit with SWMBO, she didn't cotton to the last day, how we always seem to end up back/ near the station, no matter which direction we went!!!!! long island jack
Back in 2009 we had a holiday in Salou, while there i had another day at Tarragona (how things had changed from 1998) and i'd always promised myself a day at the Museu de ferrocarril de Catalunya at Vilanova I la geltru, here's a few photos of the outside of the roundhouse, my only disappointment with the museum was everything was in Spanish, and as I had only just managed to master saying," Yes" and "Beer" in Spanish, it was all a bit over my head!. more photos of the museum to follow, that's if you want them!! EddieB
It's good to see the 0-6-0T preserved at Haro, La Rioja in Vince's photo looking well cared for. It was one of a batch of five built by St Leonard (Belgium) for the FC Torrealba-Soria in 1892, later becoming RENFE 030-0219 - 23. Another of the same type has also survived, but by virtue of being displayed in the middle of a housing estate in Miranda de Ebro has not fared as well!

EddieB
There's a 030, #0204 in the middle of a roundabout which leads on to Tarragona docks And nicely presented it is too. It has been around a bit in preservation. When I first saw it (1988), "TARRACO" was plinthed outside Barcelona Sants station (below), and later was stored outside a railway clubhouse near the station in Tarragona.

EddieB
"PRIM" is one of three locomotives built for the metre gauge Reus-Salou by Falcon Engine of Loughborough (later Brush) that survive in that area. It stands outside the original Salou station. Edited May 11, 2017 by EddieB
vince minto
Thanks Eddie for the info on the preserved loco at Haro Still learning a lot about Spanish Railways Cheers vince
EddieB
Having returned home, I can add a little more background information. The FC Económico de Reus a Salou was inaugurated as a metre gauge tramway linking those towns and its first three locomotives (nos. 1-3, respectively "REUS", "FORTUNY" and "PRIM") were originally built as skirted 0-4-0 tram locomotives. The locomotives were built by Falcon Engine Co. of Loughborough (originally Hughes, after its founder and later Brush), who produced similar tram locomotives for several other Spanish lines. The locomotives were subsequently modified as conventional 0-4-0Ts, whilst retaining their lightweight profile - as typified by "PRIM" (FE 118/1886) preserved with a tramway type carriage outside the old station at Salou. Falcon went on to supply two conventional 0-4-0T locomotives in 1888. nos 5 "SALOU" and 6 "MAS CALBO", both of which are preserved. "MAS CALBO" (FE 153/1888) is to be found in the grounds of a hotel at Vilafortuny (near Salou), where it is also displayed with another antique carriage. "SALOU" (FE 152/1888) is to be found plinthed near to the RENFE station in Reus. The story doesn't quite end there. A Brush 0-6-2T, originally built for the FC de Olot a Gerona (Brush 281/1899), was later sold to the Reus - Salou railway. It has also survived, but the last I heard was that it had been sold into private hands (near Reus) and is not on public display. Oddly though, one of its worksplates (or a replica, perhaps?) adorns the preserved "SALOU" in Reus.
Glover
Does anyone know when the Reus-Salou line closed? This was perhaps 20 years ago but I seem to remember some narrow gauge track at Salou station, possibly including a wagon turntable. I also thought ( or just imagined it) that you could make out parts of the old track bed between Reus ( a lovely small city) and Salou. Many thanks, Glover
EddieB
It closed in 1976 (under FEVE) and the track lifted between 1979 and 1980. I think parts of the route might still be traceable, but it's a while since I was last there.
Guest
Sadly, I don't have anything else to add in the way of photos but, like Vince, I'm learning an awful lot. It's blatantly obvious that the Spanish do like a loco on a plinth, for example. Thanks for all the contributions and do keep them coming, I'm certainly finding it all fascinating.
PatB
Excellent thread and thanks to all the contributors. Does anyone have anything from Green Spain (the north coast)? I've spent a couple of short holidays with friends in the Oviedo area and noticed considerable rail interest in assorted gauges but didn't have the opportunity to investigate properly, which I now regret.
