RMweb Premium SR71 Posted November 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 20, 2021 Since recently unexpectedly spending more time at home I've been walking more. Often I'll walk around and old railway infrastructure and I'll take pictures for future modelling reference. I thought I would start a thread in case I can benefit anyone else with them. It's better than them just languishing on my phone. To start with a bridge over the River Adur South of Henfield on the former LBSCR line from Shoreham to Christ's Hospital. The bridge is located here https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/50.91047371857002,-0.29470008494763533,12.659275862088348/pin/ And now has a concrete pedestrian bridge over the top of one half. It looks as though even when in use it's strength was in question from the application of bolted reinforcement at the splices. Now, some forty plus years after closure it is rusting through although the paint still hangs on on a lot of the structure. If only modern paint was as good! RMweb Premium SR71 Posted November 21, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 21, 2021 Continuing as I intend to go on, deviating from the second post to include something modelable rather than strictly railway related. What I presume to be an anti-aircraft emplacement by Halnaker Windmill adjacent to the Goodwood estate. https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmaps/50.87901470373055,-0.6925288313875626,15.532865401128445/pin/ With the Halnaker hill overlooking the former RAF Westhampnett (now Goodwood Motor Circuit) and in sight of the former RAF Tangmere (now a housing estate and an aviation museum) it would be a good position to observe and defend both. There is also what looks to be the foundations of another in an adjacent field.
RMweb Premium SR71 Posted December 27, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2021 (edited) Today's walk ended up on an actual railway. Chinnor and Princes Risborough railway. Some reference pictures of anyone fancies modelling a railway in the rain. I've always fancied it but doubt I will ever commit the amount of stock necessary for experimental weathering. RMweb Premium SR71 Posted January 31, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 31, 2022 (edited) This weekend took us down to the River Arun and the bonus of a visit to Gaugemaster. They are at Ford next to the level crossing on the main Brighton/Portsmouth/South West route and a walk across the fields takes you to a bridge which takes the railway over the river where we could walk towards Arundel. It looks as though a new bridge has been installed over the top of the original bridge which is heavily corroded in places. We couldn't find a build date on the bridge though. Even on a Sunday the line was busy with trains from Victoria via Horsham/Brighton, from Brighton and Bognor all navigating the triangle junction. While in land by 2 miles or so the wind carries the sea air up the flood plane to the extent you can smell it in the air at the bridge. The centre span does not have this feature however, presumably as it is required to provide clearance to boats coming up the river.
