M.P. Turpin, Northolt Model Railway Club, c.1950s?

Hi Guys,

Another curious purchase on eBay!

A North British Railway 0-4-0 saddletank, original loco (one of two) 18A built at Cowlairs Works in 1872 to shunt at Leith Docks.

According to notes on the box, the model was built/owned by one M.P. Turpin, a member of the Northolt Model Railway Club. The box suggests Mr Turpin was an active scratch-building modeller in the 1950s/1960s. Can anyone shed any light on Mr Turpin, his models and modelling? Seems likely he may have published in the contemporary model railway press?

Many thanks,

Paul.

PS: the chimney was supplied loose in the box.

Had a reply from the Northolt Model Railway Club:

"... Martin Turpin was a member back in 1969 when he joined the club

and was the OO section leader and a GWR fan but moved away from the area."

Has anyone encountered Martin Turpin? I would love to learn more about this model loco's history.

But the above evidence suggests that he had other interests outside the GWR!

I interpreted the email as saying that Mr Turpin was already a senior member of the Northolt Club when this long-standing member joined in 1969.

Any idea when 18A ceased to be? I can only find one photo of it via 'Google images' search.

Sorry, I have no idea.

I've looked at a listing of 'Locomotives Illustrated' and can't see anything that would cover these.
