Popular Post Giles
I've been trying to improve my 3D drawing skills, using DesignSpark Mechanical from RS. Ive been fine drawing boxes and functional things, but thought i would try for a steam engine, which hold all the complexities one could wish for. I chose the Gas Works Peckett as being an interesting prototype. Drawn and printed in 7mm (2ft gauge) I have a Mars 2 Pro and have lately been using Eono Engineering Like Resin, which is slightly flexible, which helps when it comes to not breaking detail off! 18
stevel
that is a very nice looking print.
KeithHC
Very well done. Nice to someone else using designspark I am slowly(very!!) trying to learn to use DS and would like to do models of the England locos. Currently I just have an Ender 3 FDM printer but want to get a resin one as well. Keith ps might have to ask some questions when I get stuck……. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted May 26, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 26, 2022 Very nice Giles, what are you thinking for the chassis?
Giles
Thank you Pail, I shall scratch-build one. I've made chassis for the last half dozen locos, and it's often easier than messing about with a kit!
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted May 26, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 26, 2022 Good stuff, it’s a lovely chunky loco and that boiler print looks spot on.
Popular Post Giles
The cab has been more difficult - particularly getting the door opening right, but it's pretty good now. 14
Popular Post Giles
The buffer beams, foot plate and running plates are CNCd from brass and nickel silver. A long and arduous process, but neater than doing it by hand, and when you're making two of them...... 11 1 10

Giles
Coupling rods have now been milled for one of the locos - courtesy of the Stepcraft, using a 1mm D cutter 4
Giles
All the bearings and cranks are now milled on the Stepcraft. Slow, but repeatable, and much nicer result than making them by hand (I've done that in the past as well!) All the rods are assembled, riveted with 1mm nickel silver wire 8
Giles
Slide bars are made in one piece, as it's so much easier to keep them square etc. They will be trimmed off after soldering to the motion bracket. Slide bars and cylinder end covers are CNCd on the Stepcraft. The extra piece of the end cover 'casting' fitted to form the gland and slide bar support. The tube obviously provides a nice enclosure for the piston rod, and helps achieve a square assemble to the cylinder. Two of the four front cylinder covers. These are machined from 1.6mm nickel silver. 6

Giles
Both locos have cylinder and slide bar assemblies fitted, And injectors are on their way. (I couldn't find any of the right type to buy - otherwise I would have!) I have yet to make valves, which is a pain........ 12
Giles
The clacks and shut-off valves, which indeed were a pain...... 5 10

Giles
Lubricators are a problem, in so far as bought ones tend to be rather coarse and I can't find the type I want anyway. Don't get me started on the lubricator piping! Anyway I have a good printer so I thought i might play. 6 8
Giles
I have made the spectacle glasses for both locos, but just fitted the ones for mine . The are milled out of 1mm perspex on the Stepcraft, and fit into recesses in the print, so they are flush on the inside. 10
Giles
Progress so far, now with reach rod, blower etc. All the backhead detail is drawn up, but having slight problems with my computer which seems to have corrupted a driver somewhere !!!!!!! 9 1
Giles
Fireboxes for both Pecketts are complete. These are prints of backhead, with additional prints of manifold, regulator, door linkage, reverser and gauge-glasses. Pipework is in wire. 5 9

Giles
The chassis of mine has now had it's basic painting, and the little lubricators fitting, and they look ok. I'm waiting on the wheels......, and a bit stuck on mine till they arrive. I will worry about the lubricator drive when I have wheels and they go round! 9
