coombe junction - 37142 - Part III...

Update - The Spanish heat has certainly supressed the Expo fever somewhat - last week, I took out Board 2 to work on it, spent 15 minutes looking at it on the table, before concluding it was complete pants, putting it away and watching some TV

Remedy - Leave the layout and concentrate on rolling stock. I decided to carry on with 37142, namely adding wire handrails to the front end and lowering the body on the chassis. Bachfar introduced the wire handrails on the front of the recent 37254, but not the first model of 37238. Small holes were drilled and the handrails formed from 0.11 thou Guitar wire.

In terms of lowering the body, firstly, I should like to thank Steve N (Pixie) for sending me a detailed description of how he did an excellent job lowered his 37 last year - Can't wait to see his 2FS layout.

This involves removing the locating lugs from the inside of the body, trimming the PCB for the lights at the ends, trimming the cab interiors (I haven't replaced mine yet) removing the 4 internal squarish panels from the sides and finally removing the locating lugs and reattaching the fuel tanks directly to the chassis.

Overall it improves the appearance I feel - I have added a few pics below and set it against 37238 which will soon receive the same lowering treatment as it begins its transformation to 37207. I just need to try and work out how to get the depth of field right now on my camera

It's not just the Barcelona heat that has this effect Pete... but glad that you've found something to work on. It's amazing the difference achieved by lowering the body... although judging from your descrption it's more complicated than in OO. Results too rewarding enough. It's coming along nicely. Looking forward to further reports.

Best regards (From York this week) Jon.

Hiya Pete smile.gif

Thats amazing! That mod has totally transformed the look of the engine, its especially noticable in the comparison shot. That is definately worth doing for sure, I wonder if its possible to do the same thing on other diesels too?

Jon - Thanks - Renumbering and then a spot of weathering with the new airbrush next - I shall be re reading your excellent thread before I start.

Missy - Hi and thanks also - I just have to check it negotiates the curves ok but there seems to be a little play in there.

In terms of other locos, I guess so. For sure, the class 47, which had its own thread dedicated to it ;) - It does beg the question why the manufacturers can't do it during the design process...mind you, us modellers do like to fiddle and fettle with everything.

I recall you were after a 37 in green for Highclere...that would also look the business on your oil tank train...

Looking sharp Pete! Lowering the model on it's bogies certainly gives it a more heavyweight feel which is hard to capture in models, especially so in 2mm.

As for my 2mm layout, I hope you're sitting comfortably for the next couple of decades... wink.gif

I know the feeling about the layout Pete - I looked at mine at the weekend and found that the trackbed had gone banana-shaped, so the enthusiasm drained away rather!

The lowering work makes a big difference to the 37 - suddenly it looks a lot more powerful. I swapped my green 37 for a pile of Stephen Harris wagon kits, so I can't try it on that, but I have a 24 and a Warship that I'll be looking at closely now to see if they're higher than they should be. The detail on the bufferbeams makes a big difference as well.

Thanks for posting this.

Pix - Thanks - Agreed, the loco bodies always seem to be aloof from the bogies.

As for your 2FS layout...having seen what you have achieved with Roath...bring it on sooner - I may not be around in a couple of decades!

Andy - Thanks - After these I will have a crack at the 25's...mind you, they need a lot more surgery...General anesthetic as opposed to Local :D

The buffer beam detail is mostly Dapol with a few Farish bits as supplied - they are a little chunky in places and may get replaced with something thinner - I prefer to have at least one end without a coupling.
