Pannier Capers-Part 3

Bit an update on the progress of my model of Newton Abbot's 9717.

Following on from a discussion in the last entry regarding the position of the sandbox filler lids on the Bachmann Pannier here's the real thing on the South Devon Railway's L92.

As we can see on the prototype the lids are actually in line with the front of the smokebox as opposed to the Bachmann model that has them situated closer to the buffer beam.

Here's my model of 9717 progressing nicely showing the sandbox filler lids in relation to the RT Models sand box pull rods.

Robert's etches are an exact match for the protoype so in theory the lids need moving backwards on the model version. I did try to see how well they were glued and in this instance I left well alone. They were stuck fast and I thought attempting to move them may course a lot of damage and it's something I can live with.

Finally. a shot taken on JH of 9717. I've added the Fox buffer beam numbers and the HMRS 'blue circles' to the cab sides The Fox numberplates are excellent but I think I may need to revisit fireman's side as the plate doesn't look level.

I've decided to fit screw\three links to the stock for myTeign Valley Project so I've a pair of Smiths ones on order. A few other jobs and finish the weathering then 9717 will be almost complete.

Cheers,

Mark

Nice work and you've made me look at my 3796 for the same additions.Great prototype photo.

Good observation. I'll have a look at my other pictures to see if there's a variation.

There is/was a whitemetal casting of a sandbox lid, Alan Gibson did one some years ago, don't know if it's still available.

Nice work, Mark, looking very nice.

I agree with Tim re checking for variations, but I'd have thought that the 57XX series (low cab) at least, might all be consistent? Perhaps the later '8750' series had the filler in a slightly different position?

Notwithstanding that, I think that the damage is more likely to occur removing the original, plastic moulded one, and it's something that I have also decided to live with. Fabricating a replacement from plasticard was never going to be the issue, removing the old one cleanly and without a mark was the challenge!

Thanks Robin,

It would be a nice little project I think.

I've seen on your layout thread mutterings about black wartime livery locos and this would be a nice idea too.  I'm quite tempted myself but Newton didn't have too many 57xx's atound the mid 40's. Not sure if Exeter could come up with a suitable example.

Thanks Tim V and CK,

There may well be variations between the earlier and later designs of 57xx.  I should take a trip to Didcot and have a look at their 3738.

Like CK said I do think it would be a pig of a job to sort out. I did a bit of probing with a scaple and no way was it going to come loose without a lot of force. Looking underneath the sandbox filler moulding is secured with a hefty lump of plastic.

Even if you could remove it I think the clean up work wouldn't be easy either so following CK's advice I'm leaving well alone.

I will be doing an earlier cab 57xx (5798) as well and may reinvestigate moving the lids-but then again.

Cheers,

Mark

I'm in one of those 'life's too short' modes at the moment...but give it a couple of weeks and I will be back as equally obsessive with my 2FS stuff...:P

Finally able to check my data - yes, every decent picture I've looked at confirms your findings.

Well, well! ;) Thanks Tim for confirming that. Though wait and see if we can be disproved ;)

My trawl through photos led to the same conclusion as Tim. The front of the cover aligns with the front edge of the sandbox. Looking at my Bachmann body on a HighLevel chassis, the cover moulding is centred over the front edge of the box. Unless there was an angled pipe under there, most of the sand poured in would miss the box...
