Chris M
I ahve been scan some old photos today. I found some photos of my Bodmin Road layout built in 1985/6 which may be of interest. The worlds of model railways and photography have moved on over the last thirty years so the photos aren't the greatest. Hopefully my model captured the feel of the place even though it was only 10ft by 6ft 6ins.
Chris M
Note the pen and stud contact for point changing on the control panel. And the shelf in the operating area for holding tea and sandwiches - very important on all layouts. I am ashamed to admit that, back in those days, I ran clay hoods with green diesels. How could I?
Chris M
I put a gradient on the approach to the station, just like at the real location. The station buildings were all scatchbuilt Edited August 7, 2017 by Chris M
Chris M
I was very pleased with myself when I acutally got the MTK class 22 together and running. Nowadays of course I could just buy a ready to run one that is vastly superior. Yes the curves were tight but the whole layout was only 6ft 6in deep Edited August 7, 2017 by Chris M
Chris M
And, when stored it fitted nicely in the bedroom alcove. I now model in N gauge and G scale. I still think Bodmin Road is an excellent location and I have worked out that I could get a very close to full scale N gauge version in no more than 16ft by 3ft 3in....

To get an MTK kit to that standard is good modelling. :locomotive: Opening a box is opening a box. :scratchhead: The layout is good as well. Chris M
I think modelling today is different and easier. I do think stock on sale today needs a little work to make it look right. For instance my N gauge Brush 4 is well detailed but looked a bit plasticky out of the box. Adding the front details a little weathing to the roof and bogies made it look so much better.

Chris M
This was in RM wasn't it? What a splendid memory you have. Yes May 1987. After a gap of 27 years I have been lucky enough to have two more layouts in the RM in recent years.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted September 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 23, 2017 I remember the RM article too, being impressed by the alcove storage arrangements and how you managed to get the feeling of the place in such a small space. Was the pointwork handbuilt?

Chris M
The point work was all Peco.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted September 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 23, 2017 Thanks! You did a good job fitting it all in then. It's only really apparent how tight the curve are on that overhead view of the platforms.
Chris M
Bodmin Road went when the bedroom was required for little ones. A new layout was built which lived in the shed and went to exhibitions. This layout used the buildings from Bodmin Road but was very different in character.
