  1. 1. Are transfers easy to do?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am wondering if I was to buy

"Class 37/4 37401 "MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS " BR BLUE Large Logo"

How could I use transfers to renumber it? And how could I add the orange lines to it?

You first need to remove the exiting numbers and the name. Fortunately this is much easier on Bachmann models. Fox, as stated, or Railtec do suitable transfers. Orange stripes from transfers can be tricky on some areas of locos. Check the exact positions of your choosen loco from photos.

Welcome to the forum.

The existing names and numbers can be removed with careful use of either T-Cut or Brasso on a cotton bud. New transfer No's arrows etc are available from various suppliers. As a beginner to changing loco identities, I'd suggest using water slide transfers from the likes of Rail-Tech or Fox. Orange cant rail lining cab be applied again with transfers, but it's a very tricky and delicate task to get a good result - just some patience and trial and error etc.

When complete, the new transfers require to be sealed with a coat of varnish to avoid damage when handling etc

I have used a bow pen, but tend to stick to transfers now.

I used to try using long lengths of line in one go, but it caused no end of grief, so now just use pieces approx. 2" in length and slightly overlap them. You can't see the joints after varnishing (well I can't anyway!!)

I do the more awkward areas first, usually around the cabs, then work my way to the middle, alternating from one side to the other, to give a bit extra drying time for each piece of transfer.

HTH.

Cheers,

Phil.

Get the moderators to shift this topic over to the RTR Modifying and Detailing area of the forum and people will be happy to give you advice and tell you how to do it.

If its experience you need and have questions, you can ask what you want and we can all reply so its specific to what you want. Your discussion can then be your own, rather than having to be about the Bachmann 37 so long as its here. Then you can talk through what your thinking and we can help while in the end celebrate when you post your results and showcase what you model as you develop in ability and confidence.

Check for photos of the prototype because most, if not all, of the /4's didn't originally come with orange lines. Depending on what timeframe you're modelling you might not need them, I think it was late 1988 when the orange cantrail stripes started to be added.

In that case, you will need this:

It is just the numbers and new 3D decal nameplate to allow you to renumber and rename any large logo 37.

If she is the modern DRS owned machine with cantrail lines, you will need these:

and as with any modern loco, she is plastered with these:

Two on her nose and one beside the top of each cab door as seen here.

As mentioned above and in various other threads on the subject, remove the originals with a small about of T-cut on a cotton bud slowly.

Good choice of loco and good luck

The packs suggested by cal.n are a good starting point and may well give you what you need. The style of large logo numbers as seen in the packs are unique to this loco. When DRS approached us a couple of years ago to do the vinyls that are currently carried by 403, they were keen to replicate the hand-painted style numbers as applied by Eastfield (or was it Glasgow Works - I can never remember) in the 80s - which is what we did. So if you opt for one of those packs you can be certain you're getting the real thing in miniature :)

What methods do people recommend to paint the hooks as a similar colour to the yellow on the 37? and what colour grades or brands do people suggest?

I presume I'd need to buy both of these for the two types of hook that 37403 has

DP45-0924 Lamp Brackets (Round & Square ended)

DP45-09LW8 'L' Shaped Western Region Lamp Brackets for Classes 37/42/43 & 52A4mm

The 2 lower brackets (the White ones in your pic) are already on the model IIRC, so it's just the Western region style you'll need, although these are the type of detailing parts that it's handy to have in a stash, they always come in useful somewhere.

Like the top bracket on my 37401, which came from a Vitrains detailing pack !

The lack of recessed MW socket next to the headlight, no top bracket, plus the addition of WR lampbrackets, give 403 quite a different 'face' compared to 401.

Cheers,

Phil.

So I have received the 37 and ran it in, fitted DCC chip and checked the sound. However, we cannot seem to get the roof to fix down.

We have removed the fan surround in the roof of the 37 leaving the fan held in place with a piece of insulation tape. The two lugs on either end of the speaker have been removed. The roof will come down over the model but it won't get fully down and clipped in secure. About a 5mm gap.
