BetBet Creek

This is a few firsts for me, first comp entry, first white metal kit, first HO Scale, First Australian scene.

The idea is a curve of track going over a dry creek bed, past a windmill dead tree and Kangaroos, with a dirt road crossing.

This may take some time as I have three layouts on the go and many card kits to build.

also first have to build a cake box to those sizes, the only cake box I have is a cheesecake shop box which is to big.

Have not done any work on the diorama as I have been spending my time watching some people playing with 12"to1' railways outside, they are relaying the track and now loading two diesels, two carriages and ten hoppers on the track with a giant crane to do the ballasting.

Lots of fun, and I thought ballasting was a tedious job,

  • 1 month later...

Been a busy Christmas with plenty of visitors, the holiday here is six weeks (middle of Summer) and the temps have been in the high 30's, to hot for the shed.

will start again now, but indoors, just to finish this one. will start another one soon, maybe a Christmas theme. Santa's workshop or similar..

I was just wondering if you could get a HO scale V8 Interceptor , and a certain leather clad policeman to go with it ?

Love the colours on the groundwork.

Shapeways do one but it is 2012 - 16 model, to late for the diesel I am thinking of using, then again there is a mad max version and leave the diesel off. :scared:

Nearly finished, just the power lines to do now, and a final weathering.

Can't find a railway crossing in my spares, only railroad(American, we use English here)

Great scenery modelling with all the little details, on its own, and also with the locomotive, which does dominate, but love the contrast between powerful modern technology and the bare landscape it is passing through. How about a photo of the locomotive head-on from a similar view to image 2?

Still got to get the hot glue gun out to make the power lines.

Great! Just need a backscene with Ayers Rock! Only kidding Geoff. I have virtually no knowledge of the Australian railway network I have seen some lovely narrow gauge layouts online.

Progress on my Cake Box is a bit slow at the moment - making a start on the Dapol kit of Stephenson’sRocket at the weekend.

All the best, Marlyn

Geoff, great to see another take on the railways.  Excellent.

As to the locomotive dominating the scene too much, I think the angle of your last photo proves otherwise.

From that viewpoint, the quartet of windmill, telegraph poles, group of trees and whistle sign perfectly frame the locomotive and the locomotive becomes the centre of attention in a balanced and most delightful way.  That has to be the way to present it!

Thanks for posting.  I enjoyed that.

Thanks, I have enjoyed doing this, a bit different from my N Gauge stuff, now for something completely different. Probably On18 (O gauge on N Gauge track)

Have just viewed and would like to rotate second and third picture but can't work out how to in the post.

I have only just found this, and am quite taken with the atmosphere, it's really convincing. Great stuff.

If you're still unsure about the loco, I would personally leave it off as I do feel it dominates a bit too much. I liked the idea of an empty crossing in the middle of nowhere, which is how it would look 99% of the time :) . But that's subjective. Maybe with weathering the loco would blend in more? But that's a big decision of course.

To get the photos right way up, I believe they need to be manually turned first with a photo editing software, eg the RMweb image editor (under "apps & content", you may need to install Flash).

I also use the 5s for quick pictures and had the same problem.

Not being a technophobe my simple understanding of it is that it is to do with a program in the phone itself not being able to rotate the picture when used on certain sites - something like this website, (others might be able to use the correct technical speak here as I haven't a clue).

The easiest way is always ensure the picture comes out the right way up is to ensure the volume button is pointing down.....worked for me - when I remember to do it!!!

I have turned the pictures for you.

To do this in my case I run them through my photo editing suite, in this case Serif PhotoPlus X7 as it was already on but my main program Affinity will do the same, then rotate the pictures the correct way up, export them in jpeg to whether you save yours - in this case I just dumped them on my desktop and hey presto attached to the page as normal.

I agree that the loco is distracting from this lovely model as it is overpowering the scene, do you have anything smaller like say a track inspection vehicle?

I thought I can do better that say I don't understand why so I went and searched out the answer and here it is in plain English

the iPhone writes the orientation info to the EXIF data of the image. The reason why the images flip when you email them or transfer them to certain operating systems is because not all environments acknowledge EXIF data. This means that the orientation tags aren't being acknowledged.

EXIF - Exchangeable image file format.

There you go, all nice and clear now...........

Now I need to go for a lie down!

Thanks Kevin,

I think I need a lie down as well, that sounds too technical for me, that is why I have a graphic artist daughter, to understand these things.

Thank you also for turning the pictures for me.

I don't have anything smaller so might just leave it off. Or I might put the tail end of a passenger carriage disappearing off the back edge.
