Catenary as seen on French DC lines

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

Am pondering a new venture of a small French layout. I have a particular fondness for the green ‘box on wheels’ Midi Electrics that used to shunt in the 80’s and 90’s. Like this:

I’m aware that the BB4100 series is available through Roco (though secondhand) but this would obviously require some catenary.

The French catenary for DC lines looks a lot different to the catenary used over here and in other countries – for example this:

The only catenary that I can find that looks similar are the old Lima masts. Are there any other suppliers of suitable catenary?

Not sure whether this will turn into a probject or not, though I have seen some nice building kits and stock that could make a nice small 1500dc branch line terminus with small yard (maybe!)

Due to this purchase:

my scale has changed to n! Looking at the catalogue there is no DC catenary for n gauge from Sommerfeldt. May have a think about whether I want catenary in n gauge, some years ago I had a Minitrix layout with some catenary and it was always a problem!

You could try this lot:-

or these:-

Some of the lines south of Bordeaux are still equipped with the arched 'masts' built by the Midi when the lines were electrified 80+ years ago.

Many thanks. Will have a good look at both these sites - a quick look looks promising!

What scale are you building? Those French masts look reminiscent of the old Triang catenary masts if you are doing OO/HO. Or are you looking for something a little finer? ;)

After thinking I was going down the HO route, i've bought an n gauge layout that I plan to make use of.
