LULFAN
Hi all I am thinking of buying a freightliner container kit but what would I need to put them on? Does anyone know of a RtR model of the railway wagons that they went to make up the train that would look right in the 1960's Thanks for any help
RMweb Gold Dagworth Posted August 19, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2013 Hornby make 1960s freightliner flats, but they are a pretty awful model... they first came out about the time of the real thing and show it! The real wagons ran in sets of (normally) five, with buffers on the outer ends of sets only and bar couplings within the sets. Up to five sets would then run together to make a 25 wagon train. They did occasionally run a five set in a mixed freight train but not often, block trains were the norm. The Hornby wagon does not have buffers and so should really only be the inner wagon of the five-set. Andi
Glorious NSE
There is also a *very* nice etched brass kit from Colin Craig - but as Andi says, that Hornby one is the only RTR option at present. S-Kits I think do an upgrade kit to go some way to making the Hornby one a little more presentable, adding bufferbeams to let you model outer wagons, and correcting the ride height. Madcaravanner
To be honest the Early Hornby offering was a rush job and obviously they did what they do best make toys but as a basis of an improved model they can be altered either by the addition of a kit or by a scratch builder Even today you can get new inner wagons from them at £19.99 for a Railroad one or £39.99 for a more detailed version Personally I would find a set of 5 and do the mods yourself to get the level of detail you want. Glorious NSE
The £39.99 one is a KFA wagon, the prototypes were built in the late 80s, it's not a good match for a 1960s flat...the Railroad one is the current edition of the original Triang/Hornby model... Baby Deltic
Intercity models (if they are still trading) do whitemetal 'Ridemaster' bogies to replace the awful Hornby/Triang offerings. Metal wheels are really a must, and I think the IC Ridemasters come with the correct sized metal wheels. As mentioned, you can get a conversion kit to convert an inner wagon to an outer one with buffer beams, air tanks and handbrake wheels etc. Edit: Just had a look on their site at the Ridemaster is IC8 at £6.00 a pair: http://www.intercitymodels.com/Bogies.html It also says that they were going to do a conversion kit for the Hornby//Triang freightliner wagons, but decided instead to to a kit for a rake of five which should be cheaper to buy than the cost of buying five of the old RTR Hornby offerings. Glorious NSE
Did the ICM kit ever happen? That website seems to perennially give a big list of things they might get round to one day...
jonhall
I took the Triang Hornby flats and using a piercing saw opened out the frames, I'm not sure why I bothered as they were going to get waste containers on top anyway, Jon

Satan's Goldfish
Conversion pack for the Hornby wagons is from s-kits to create a better looking 5 set. I'm part way through a couple, it's an interesting process.... Loving Jonhall's idea above of opening out the frames, i may have to look into that but already add brake tanks/distributor to some of mine and they'll now get in the way

RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 2, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2014 are the Bachmann FGA and FFA similar / the same as the Hornby Railroad model? says era 6 on website so guess so? The same but better - reflects the two types of wagon, end (with buffers one end, solid drawbar on the other) and intermediate (solid drawbar both ends) Yippee Bring them on Heres a super Brian Thomas shot of 4S88 Pengam - Edinburgh at Norton Junction to whet the appetite Look at emptiness of first few wagons!
