Well, it's been a bit of a long time since I last posted, or weathered an item of rolling stock in fact, but I've finally got around to picked up the brushes again! This time on some 009 Scale Stock for my WW1 Trench Railway, Amiens 1918 - Tracks & Trenches

See full topic on the layout here;

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/123735-ww1-trench-railway-009-exhibition-layout/

First up, the Minitrains Brigadelok 0-8-0T.

It's been a number of years since I've weathered my last piece of rolling stock, and must admit it took a bit of a while to get back into the swing of things.
Due to the exposed gears and motor on this one I thought I'd try a new technique, featuring washes. It took a few attempts to get it how I wanted it, but overall very happy with look so far.
Still needs more work on the frames, rods and buffer beams, plus it's matching water cart, but not too far off complete.
Let me know what you think!

Bit more weathering and painting done today.
First up was the German Water Cart, which now matches the Brigadelok, using the same wash technique. Whilst the loco was out, I also made a start on the under-frames and rods.I plan to add a bit of mud dust effect at a later date.
I also got around to painting the Red Buffer Beam on the Decauville Progres Black, which looks a lot more fitting in the Trenches. The red is still just poking through, though this will be sorted when the loco receives it weathering treatment. Other plans for the loco including adding some WD Markings to the side tanks.
Hopefully will have a bit more stock weathered in time for the Layout's next outing in just under 2 weeks time at the Gartell Light Railway Model Railway Exhibition, Templecombe on the 10th - 11th Feb :)

Callum, have you tried a thin coat of Humbrol leather coloured paint on the motion work before weathering it?

Works a treat and gives the washes/powder something to stick to.

Made a start on weathering 3 of the 5 US Bogie wagons. After a few hours of applying the washes they certainly look a lot more suited for the Trench Environment now.
I started off with an overall wash of Citadel Nuln Oil, wiped clean, followed by a light wash of AK Interactive Dry Dust.
Very pleased with how the wood effect on the decks has come out. Though I may added a bit more Dry Dust to the bogies.
Must admit I did manage to detach all four stakes on the both the Flat Car, but with a bit of super glue all are now back in their rightful place. Should be interesting when I come to weathering the 2 with all the side stakes added too... :jester:

First set of W^D Transfers added to the Decauville Progres. Really does suit her very well.
At the moment they are just balancing in place, awaiting some spray vanish. Just to to make sure nothing touches them until then, as they've fallen off once or twice all ready.  :paint: ;)

A short slideshow, taking a look at some of my recent weathering projects. In this addition, we take a look at the Minitrains Brigadelok 0-8-0T and Water Cart, which have been brush weathered using a mixture of Acrylic Washes. I've gone for an all over oily look, based on images of the real locomotive and tenders in service. These are the first two items that I've weathered for use on my 009 Scale WW1 Trench Railway, with more items to follow.

Let me know what you think!

Hope you enjoy!

Bit more weathering and cleaning done, ready for the weekend! Can safely say the Layout seems to be running well after it's first treatment with Rail Zip. Hopefully will will run smooth at the show. Thanks for all the info about not over doing it.

As for weathering and detailing, first up, the Minitrains Decauville has had it's transfers varnished. Really looks the part now, thought it will be weathered at a later date too. I had a bit of trouble with it not running smooth during the layouts first outing, so decide to clean the wheels with some Rail Zip and a cotton bud. At first the engine would not move at all (was very worried at that point), but after a while I got it moving. Once on a roll it started to run sweet at a nut (apart from a few stalls on the insulfrogs). Touch wood it will run well at the show this weekend.

Next up, I added the finishing touches to the final two US Stake Wagons. Very pleased with how they turned out, they certainly look the part in a full rake. Now to some loads to put on them...

Well, the Trench Railway is all cleaned and packed away, ready for it's second outing tomorrow at the Gartell Light Railway Model Railway Exhibition, Templecombe (Sat 10th - 11th Feb).

Managed to get around sorting my new stock box. The rolling stock and vehicles fit a treat, with plenty of room spare.

Hopefully all will run smoothly. :)

Here's a link to more info on the event;

Snow? More like Oil and Grime..
Weathering now complete on the Minitrains Schneider Locotracteur and Decauville Progres. Very pleased with how both of them have turned out. Gone for a lighter look on the Decauville, picking out the rivet detail with streaks (you can just about see it on some of the close-up cab shots).
Let me know what you think  :)

A short video taking a look at a quick test run, featuring my Bachmann ROD 2-8-0 (Robinson O4) fitted with Digital Sound. I've backdated the locomotive into WW1 ROD Black, add large ROD Marking and Numbers to the Tender Sides, as well as painting the Buffer Beams Black. I also fitted a the model with a ESU Loksound V4.0 Decorder and Speaker, equipped with Sound from South West Digital. This Model is just one of a number of Locomotives I am currently backdating into ROD Livery, with more to follow.

Hope you enjoy!

A quick tutorial showing you how to Renumber a Hornby Locomotive, using a number of Humbrol Products and a Sharpie Permanent Marker. This interest technique provides an quick and effect way of removing factory numbers and text from models, without damaging the surrounding paintwork.

In this tutorial, we will be renumbering a Hornby R3565 LMS, 8F Class 2-8-0, from LMS Livery into a fellow British Railways Liveried Class member.

Hope you enjoy!
