vcltel
I bought a second hand but virtually unused Broadway Paragon PRR K4 with QSI sound. It was fine until we had a problem with the club's DCC outfit when the loco decided it didn't want to work. I did the "Magic Wand" reset and it announced that it had reset to factory standard but although the horn and bell work as do some of the other functions, it steadily refused to move. A friend tried using his computer to analyse and sort it out but he couldn't get it moving either. I stripped the loco down and put a 12v current direct to the motor terminals, the motor ran and the motion all worked OK. So it is obviously something amiss in the sound chip - no chuff no move. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution other than a new chip (which I don't intend to buy)?
RMweb Gold NoggintheNog Posted January 12, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2014 QSI decoders have a standby mode where only the horn and lights work and it will not move., press F9 twice and it should switch it off, then F6 to start up the sound. Alcanman
You need to double click F6 to start up sound. Mal
vcltel
Thanks for the suggestions, I got out the handbook and read about standby mode etc so I tried double clicking F6 , it made some air blasting noises but still did not move. I tried double clicking F9 first and after a pause, double clicking F6, still nothing in the movement mode. I then hooked up a DC supply, on about 80% power the horn gave a number of short blasts but still nothing even on full power. Anymore suggestion please? I am an electronic idiot so am grateful for any help.
RMweb Gold NoggintheNog Posted January 14, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2014 Given there is sound its probably safe to say the chip isnt blown or anything, so I have to come back to the whole 'standby' mode situation. The best bet is to go to this webpage http://qsisolutions.com/downloads/index.html Scroll to the bottom and there is a link to all the manuals in pdf form, these are far more detailed than the broadway handbook thing that comes with the locos. You want the one called Quantum HO DCC Reference Manual Ver. 3.0 , and go through sections 1.17 and 1.18 that talk you through the various shutdown modes and sequences. vcltel
Thanks Noggin, I took your advice and downloaded the manual and printed out the relevant sections. With them to hand, I tried the procedures out but still no joy! Also the F10 key to give the state in which the loco is residing didn't work either. I'm at a bit of a loss. F-UnitMad
I've had similar trouble with a Tsunami. All the sounds & lights but all of a sudden no movement whatsoever (Athearn CF7). Given how fussy the damn chip was anyway - always cutting out even on plain, clean track, & stalling where none of my other 'ordinary' DCC locos stall, my solution is to strip it out & fit an NCE DA-SR chip in it & say to hell with sound - I've had nothing but trouble with it. Sorry. I know that doesn't help (except I feel a bit better!) Rant mode/OFF.
