Something to move on my layout

I'm about to start building pointwork - I thought it would be a good idea to have some rolling stock to test it with - so I'm building a Peco Toad and 4 plank open. They are very good kits as others have said. Here are my efforts so far..... Toad roof is still to be fixed properly on, and I need to spend some more time swearing as I do the remaining handrails...

I'm still at it

To the kind people who've said nice things about my project so far; I'm still at it though all I've done in the last month is wiring.     I decided I would get all the main wiring done before laying the track, so there is a main power bus ( anticipating possible DCC later - probably much later) , some isolated sections, wiring for a number of tortoise point motors and wiring for uncoupling electromagnets. I've also installed my two old Pentrollers, with the whole layout being switchable bet

Last bits of baseboard built

I have now built the last three wooden chunks of my new railway.   As you can see the front face of the boards bulges out by 12" so the total depth at the left end is 3'6". Because is this is more than a comfortable arms length the six feet of boards at the left end is split into two boards longitudinally, so the front part can be removed to allow work to be done on the back part.   The curvy bit at the front involved quite a lot of extra woodwork, but rather than explain, I would refer y

Deep Thoughts!

I've considered building this layout for a long time (about 15 years!) - and one of the hardest decisions was whether to stick with EM gauge or go bigger to O gauge. I had built the trackwork for a compressed version of Kingswear station in EM gauge in my previous garage but I became disillusioned when I realised that although I had successfully managed to build a single slip and various other awkward turnouts, it wasn't reliable enough or accurate enough to satisfy me. I had planned it but too

Next chunk of baseboard built

I've now built the next bit of baseboard for my layout. As you can see, the level of the bottom edge of the baseboard drops from left to right to allow for the road bridge on the next baseboard. I didn't want to make all the baseboards equally deep as I am trying to keep control of the weight of the boards and the cost of the plywood.

More visualising

Here's a further drawing I'm working on to get a feel for what the layout will eventually look like. It's a drawing done in gel pen, scanned and then coloured in Photoshop.   I'm hoping to get the next board built this week - that'll be the bit where the station throat goes. The wiggle in the line of the front of the boards is where the lower edge rises from right to left by six inches, and then the front edge of the boards support the station comes out by a further nine inches.   The stat

Track plan

This shows the track plan that I'm working to, though some details will change a bit over the time of building.

Safety barriers to prevent a Tay bridge disaster from my train turntable

I have now extended the handles on the bathroom door bolts used to align my train turntable tracks, so that, when the turntable is being rotated any loose vehicles are protected from accidentally rolling off the end of the turntable deck.. I used 5/16 inside diameter brass tube from Eileen's emporium which was a perfect fit for the handles. The locks were from Screwfix.

First steps towards new layout - baseboards/fiddle yard

Hi Folks,   I'm uploading a few pictures of the first stages of my new layout in the hope that I'll get some helpful comments.   The layout is in O gauge, and is a straightish fiddle yard to terminus idea. It is set in mid- wales in the Dulas valley, and is based on the idea that the Corris Railway was to be converted to standard gauge as per the real plan from 1873ish. The proposal approved by parliament intended to link the existing Corris route to the GWR line at Brithdir near Dolgell
