Connoisseur 7mm NER brake Van - Part 2

My word I hadn't realised it had been so long since my first entry about this project, unfortunately things keep me away from it, some modelling related, some not. To keep it modelling related, the main issue was that I had been working in the garage and traipsing down to work in an unheated wooden garage on a cold, wet evening just isn't very appealing. The problem with working in the house was that on this and the previous lowmac wagon, I'd been using a fibreglass pencil to clean the surfaces

Connoisseur 7mm NER brake Van - Part 1

After my initial foray into 0 gauge with the LNER lowmac, time for the next kit. Same stable, this time it's Jim McGeowns NER birdcage brake van. To avoid boring people I won't provide much written description and let the pictures mainly speak for themselves. The only time I'll go into detail is when I deviate from the instructions provided.   The first folds.   Doors done, now to get the sides and ends on and square. ]   Attaching the solebars.     So far I've had no real issues

First foray into metal kits and 0 gauge - Part 4

It's been a while since any update but progress has been made. Shortly after my last update I attached the axle boxes but made a bit of a mess of it. I had two problems, the first was that I stuck with my original iron tip (now way past its best), and the second was that I'm not using a temperature controlled iron. The end result was that I melted the edges of the axle boxes slightly (the pictures below show this). Basically I was impatient and just wanted to carry on. I decided to be sensible a

First foray into metal kits and 0 gauge - Part 3

Edit: My goodness my grammer was bad when I first posted this.   More progress, and some problems. I started out on Thursday night by attaching the riveted plates for the deck reinforcing plates. It didn't go too well, at first I managed to loose one of them (which is still managing to hide from me despite repeated searches on the bench and on the floor) and then I just couldn't get the finish as good as I wanted.   Friday turned out to be a much better day, I got all the load tie down rings

First foray into metal kits and 0 gauge - Part 2

I had the chance to spend some more time yesterday evening playing with the soldering iron. I managed to get the the reinforcing plates on the ramps in place, which actually proved a bit more tricky than I though they would. I suspect my soldering iron tip could do with a bit of attention. It's not of the best quality so I think it hasn't lasted too well. I'll have a good look at it tonight and see if it needs a bit of attention with a file to tidy it up a bit. I also got the side supports on, w

First foray into metal kits and 0 gauge

After enjoying myself putting together a few 00 Parkside kits over the last year or so I decided to have a go at 0 gauge. I was going to get a Parkside one at first but decided to just jump straight into an etched kit, although I wasn't entirely foolhardy and choose one of connoisseur models starter kits, the LNER Lowmac. I've spent the last few weeks acquiring various supplies (the kit, wheels, flux and solder etc.) and started on it yesterday afternoon. I spent a few hours riveting and folding
