About this blog

365 days of modelling A reckless and foolhardy idea I had on New Years Day!

Day 36

Day 36 of 365 days of modelling. The 442 was back in the works for attention. The bogie dampers and air bags have all been filed down a bit and the bits you can’t see on the bodies pared back. There seems to be more lateral movement now but we will find out at the end of the week. Also added some more transfers to the driving cars In a shocking turn of events I have also done something that’s not 442 related. The couplings on two PWA pallet vans have been fitted which means for the fir

Day 35

Day 35 of 365 days of modelling A joint effort today as me and Mark Miller set up Southgate Park for testing ahead of being exhibited at Doncaster next weekend. The 442 had its first run and needs to go back to the workshop for some fettling and adjustments. Marks contribution to the modelling was the installation of some LU cable runs, a new cable arch and running the new token steam loco.

Day 34

Day 34 of 365 days of modelling Not much to report today, spent a while doing the other pair of windscreens on the 442 and fitted all 8 shoe beams. I might look at doing something else soon!

Day 33

Day 33 of 365 days of modelling Still working on the 442, one of the more fiddly jobs is the cab windscreen glazing, one done tonight along with buffers. Couldn’t resist getting all four driving vehicles together.

Day 32

Day 32 of 365 days of modelling The 442 is now largely complete. A few bits to add and some paint work to finish off. The aim is to get the unit to a finished enough state for the weekend.

Day 31

Day 31 of 365 days of modelling More work on the 442, the motor coach is now fully glazed. About two hours work in this as each window had to be done separately. Glad that’s done.

Wolf27 in Day 31

Day 30

Day 30 of 365 days of modelling The 442 is on the home straight, meaning I can look at something else before too long. It’s been all out effort again with 2 vehicles more or less completed, with some fettling to do on the cab area of the DTC. Still a few more things to do in the coming days but it’s worth the effort.

Day 29

Day 29 of 365 days of modelling Transfer day! The 442 has now got its numbers and route branding. It has also had a coat of varnish to seal them in. The motor coach had its couplings fitted, all 5 vehicles now have their couplings.

Day 27

Day 27 of 365 days of modelling All the window frames on the 442 now fitted! And all the windows tinted. The day of completion is getting closer.

Day 26

Day 26 of 365 days of modelling Vehicle number 3 now fitted with window frames, took about 90 min to do this one. Couplings also ordered from West Hill Wagon Works. Thought I’d best get them as they are quite important! .

Day 25

Day 25 of 365 days of modelling Yet again it’s the 442. About two hours work fitting the window frames to this and the other side of the MBLS. Only three more vehicles to do.

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 25

Day 24

Day 24 of 365 days of modelling.I have done less tonight than any other night as was a fiddly job! One side of the 442 MBLS had its self adhesive window frames fitted. It took a while as the window apertures were quite a bit smaller than the frames so had to be filed to size, the door outlines were also fitted.

Wolf27

Day 23

Day 23 of 365 days of modelling Mostly I have been varnishing. Coat of gloss on all vehicles of the 442, once the shed got up to a decent temperature. I was going to do the additional pick ups on 73004 but didn’t have the inclination. That might be tomorrows job

Day 21

Day 22 of 365 days of modelling Todays modelling content solely involved the 442, for a change. The bogies were fitted with their wheels, bogie packing pieces made, underframe module and vehicle endspainted black, bogie bolts glued in place and the whole lot assembled and put on the track. Still lots to do so get ready for another week of 442 updates! I’ll be glad when this is done so I can do something else.

Day 21

Day 21 of 365 days of modelling A big push with the 442 today. Paintwork details on the driving coaches being done but a few tweaks still to do. 8 bogies made up with two more pairs of side frames cast. These have now been fully assembled and painted, along with the motor coach chassis. One of the trailer has also had its power doors fitted. Nothing more than strips of black insulating tape! Wheels for the unit were also made today using the later Lima pizza cutter wheels. What? S

Day 20

Day 20 of 365 days of modelling The 442 now looks like a 442 with the front end paintwork coming along, still some tidying up to do but the classic look is there. The brass bogie inners were assembled and the first pair of bogie sides cast and cleaned up. Both PWA’s now have there bogies fitted and just await couplings. No pics of this as there is nothing to see! And I forgot

Day 19

Day 19 of 365 days of modelling Minimal modelling tonight, other things to do! However don’t be disappointed, what modelling I did involved the 442! It’s now got a coat of yellow which means the paint work is nearing an end. Also had this arrive today, a nice bit of 3D printing from Kim Durose and the Trib Train Auto Trailer cab end, for test building. That’s a job for tomorrow and over the weekend.

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 19

Day 18

Day 18 of 364 days of modelling The 442 work continues with the final two vehicles receiving red paint along with two pairs of bogie sides from the first 442 build being prepared for mould making and resin casting. Another set of Gloucester fast freight bogies assembled and test fitted under PWA no5 Finally a bit of work in the ferry tank, looking at the end platforms and buffer beams

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 18

Day 17

Day 17 of 364 days of modelling Not much at all today. Just masking the last two 442 vehicles so the red can go on tomorrow, it’s too cold in the shed to do anything. More interesting stuff to come.

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 17

Day 16

Day 16 of 365 days of modelling. No work on the 442 tonight, instead it was laying the stabiliser rail on Southgate Park. Don’t worry though, more work on the 442 tomorrow!

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 16

Day 15

Day 15 of 365 days of modelling Masking and yet more masking. More 442 masking. I promise it won’t be like this all year! Just need to get this done.

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 15

Day 14

Day 14 of 365 days of modelling Yet more work on the 442, one coach had had the red elements added, took some time to mask it so I wouldn’t have any problems, seems to have gone well. Also sorted out parts for the bogies, which still need to be built. Had some more stuff arrive in the post, three HO wagons which will be rebuilt at some stage to make them more OO friendly and a couple of PEP unit coaches. One is a 313 motor coach for a future test train project and a 508 trailer fo

Day 13

Day 13 of 365 days of modelling Success with the 442 paintwork, just need to sort the red stripe without ruining it! Finally fitted the nameplates to 87023, nearly three years since I did the model.

Wolf27

Wolf27 in Day 13

Day 12

Day 12 of 365 days of modelling A number of things planned tonight but only one actually happened, spent around 1 1/2 hours masking up the 442 and gave it a coat of blue. Fingers crossed this will better than last time as the time spent masking should ensure the livery elements are correctly placed!
