This is one way of doing it.

blog-0877076001361003166.jpgAs there isn't an Ultrascale conversion set for the Dapol Western yet, I decided to see what I could do with wheelsets I had in stock.

I managed to con persuade Andy York to donate his production Western to undergo the following butchery, thanks Andy.

The raw materials, the Ultrascale wheel for the Heljan Western on the left obviously.

The Dapol axles need the stub axles and wheels removing and discarding, keeping the central drive muff and the brass axle bearings.

The Ultrascale axles need stripping down into their component parts by removing the wheels and gear cog.

The dimension across the outside face of the Ultrascale wheel is 22.2mm or thereabouts, so when the axle has been cut either side of the centre knurling to give 2 stub axles, after tidying the cut end up, these need to be inserted centrally into the Dapol muff to give the same overall dimension.

As the Dapol wheel is all steel and the Ultrascale one is plastic centred, a method of picking up current between the brass collector bush and the Heljan wheel rim is required.

My rather inelegant solution was to drill a 0.5mm hole in the thin shoulder of the brass bush and solder in a piece of 0.3mm phosphor bronze wire.

The bushes are then slipped on the previously assembled stub axles followed by the wheels and the p/b wire is adjusted to bear on the back of the wheel.

There is a boss on the rear of the Heljan wheel which needs about 1mm cutting off to allow a comfortable fit and the the wheel to turn freely.

The whole assembly is clipped back in the bogie block, and voila, an EM Dapol Western.

As can be seen, the outer 2 axles have a full metal rear face whereas the centre one only has a metal rim, so a slight variation in p/b strip bending is required.

I'm glad to see the rest of it's all in one piece! ;)

 

It looks as though the centre brake rigging arm fouls the centre driver, I assume it'll need letting out a bit? The pick-ups may be 'inelegant' as you say but they'll do the job.

 

This one's destined, after a few tweaks, to become Western Prince and become somewhat filthy and worn and should be running at Ally Pally after I've done the dirty. Thanks for taking the plunge Mike!

Well, mostly in one piece Andy. The plates are still in the box, so I don't think I've lost too much!
 
Re the brake rigging, my thoughts are that the plastic mouldings need ditching, (no slur intended on Dapol as they are a means to an end for the RTR market), and some etched brass replacements are required. Funnily enough, that's in hand.

Thanks for posting this, it's good to see how it all works and that the arrangement is much the same as the 22s. I'll be waiting to see if Ultrascale go ahead with the P4 conversion, otherwise I might have to do something similar. A couple of questions, though. In your photos it looks like the body and bogie aren't sitting level. Was the other end resting on something higher when you took the photo? The centre axle appears to be higher than the others. Is there some vertical float on this axle? Are your pickups interfering with this and forcing the axle upwards?

One end is sitting on a toothbrush, hence the unlevelness.

The centre axle is being forced up by the brake rodding, which I think is visible on the photo.

Yes, in the photo with the side piece fitted, but it also appears to be higher in the photos above that one.

Good and clear that Mike... almost simple enough for me to follow... almost. Actually bought a Westerns book today and now have some very nice fading and weathering ideas.

Good to see that you've found a way forward with a conversion Mike but your 5 min timescale estimate for the job is inaccurate by a factor of at least 10. For aesthetic reasons I'll be looking forward to the Ultrascale version.
