Finally ….

Job's Modelling

I couple of weeks ago I was surfing on the internet searching for another possible lighting solution for my diorama’s. I left the website I was looking at in front of my computer, while I went to go for a shower.

When I came back there was I new massage in my Outlook. This was an order confirmation for the light I was looking at. My wife had just ordered them for my.

I dismanteled the lighting above Northall Dock to see the possibilities of this set.

First I made a new lighting frame the way I read in the chapter about Shadow Boxes in How to build a diorama.

I create a piece of cart in a 45 degree angle on the lid of the APA-box. On the cart I could fix the led strip, that had double sided tape. The rest of the lighting is outside the box on top of the lid.

On the underside of lid I glued glossy white paper for reflecting the light.

And now just some picture of the diorama in different lights. All pictures are made with the same camera settings. What is your favourite?

I left away some terrible green and red pictures. And this is just a limited selections of the possibilities I have. For the pictures I just changed the colours and didn’t brighten or dim the lights.

I think I finally found the solution for my general lighting problem. Do you agree with me?

Regards,

Job

The last one by a long shot; it gives the impression of a late-autumn afternoon with a warm, low sun which I find very appealing.

So you can change the colour tints of each colour in the lighting?  I like that idea.

Care to share a link for the lighting rig please?

Thanks every one for your reply.

In the link the internet shop where I bought the led set. They have several lengths. I used the 1 meter set, because a APA-box is just about 70 cm.

Their website is in Dutch, but I;m sure they will give an answer to your questions if you use their contact page.

I haven't tried out all possibilities, but no. 6 will do for me now.

I have already bought to other sets for my other APA-boxes.

Hi Job, very interesting as usual.

For me, no.1-3 has too many shadows, especially behind the white building.

I like no. 5 best, because the light is more even, but there is maybe a little too much shadow at the bottom of the Buildings?

No. 6 for me is a little too orange, although there seems to be slightly more light at the bottom?

The lighting is suprisingly cheap, considering there is a remote control etc.

(PS: The link isn't working but it's just some extra letters after the html that needs moving I think)

The link again: http://www.ledstripshop.nl

open the upper line: RGB Ledstrip voordeelsets SALE!!

I tried it and the link works this way.

Thanks Mikkel,

I think that's always the problem with making photographs for this purpose.

But thanks for the critical way you looked at the pictures.

When I have finished the road and the front I will 'play' with the lights.

Maybe I have to brighten or dim it some more, and I haven't used all the possibilities I think.

But for general use it gives a lot of opportunities.

For making layout photographs I will use extra lights to get the result I like.

But on the photographic side there is a lot to learn for me.

Hi Job, I wonder if there is a chance of tilting the lights a little bit *down* so that there is more light at the bottom and a little bit less at the top/above the buildings? I'm saying this because right now in no 5 and 6 my eyes are distracted a bit away from the center of the scene to the top of the buildings, where there is more light?

I think I have to do the lightning the way they do it in a shadowbox.

Just above  my viewing opening.

First of all I'm glad I found this lightning, So now I can go on experimenting to get it right.

Dimming down the light gives also a better general light and put the scene in a late evening atmosphere.

After I have finished the road I will make some new pictures and evaluate this project.
