Edinburgh Junction... Colas 47 and loads more!

Edinburgh Junction

Hiya guys!

Time for my new blog... and I better had explain the layout over here! Right, here goes..........

Edinburgh Junction, is a 00 gauge model railway based near Edinburgh (hence the name). It currently runs on 2 baseboards, making up a 1800x2400mm baseboard. The layout runs on normal Hornby track, with Gaugemaster underlay for better running. The layout has a station, with 5 platforms, a siding/engine shed, and a mainline. The platforms are made from Metcalfe kits, which are really easy to use. The station building is also a Metcalfe product, along with the Parcels office/Waiting room just down the platform. With Platform 1 for the shorter, more local trains such as my 156 and 153, this allows the platform to take upto 3 carriages. Platforms 2 and 3 on the otherhand, are mainly for the mainline, long distance trains such as my 390, and any occasional charter services. This allows any trains upto 4 carriages (not very long, but long enough for the layout).

Platforms 4 and 5 are local service platforms, taking my 2 carriage units, and any locos that want to stable in the loco stabling point oposite platform 5. These platforms curve off from the platform 3 line, then split into two lines going to each of the platforms. These are the only 2 platforms that are terminus platforms.

The mainline is only a formation of 2 tracks, but with platforms 1 and 3 splitting off from the lines, this allows for the trains. The clockwise track, you can access both platforms 2 (on mainline) and 3 (branched off). The anti-clockwise track, you can access the thru line, for passing trains such as the daily ballast train, or speedy passengers (on mainline) and platform 1 (branched off). From platform 1, heading anti-clockwise, you can go straight on, rather than joining the mainline, to go to both the sidings or engine shed.

At one corner of the layout, is a new hill, which will have a tunnel, allowing the mainline to pass through. This is currently being constructed out of plywood, wire mesh, modelling rock and scatter grass. This will be completed by the end of August 2009.

More news, pictures and gossip on the layout will be available from time to time. I will try to update you as much as I can, so dont worry!

I have pictures on flickr, videos on YouTube, and everthing to do with the layout on my website

My gallery is still under construction, so please be patient. But, for loads of photos to keep you going, please click here

Thanks!

Jack :D :D

Right.... Im going to be running 3 carriage services (first, buffet and standard) for it to be able to fit onto the station. The services will commence towards the end of the month... Pendo services will start tomorrow, with a 4 carriage service (???). Birthday next saturday, so GC power cars arriving on saturday, but not sure about the carriages.

Got some plasticard yesterday at the MMRS exhibition in Manchester, 2x 1mm sheets, but need to order another. Going to get them from Amera Plastic Mouldings, but for the P&P price, Im going to get 5 sheets, plus ??2 P&P. One of those sheets is going to the control panel, along with the two I got yesterday. The others are going to the depot and sidings, because it is just the right thickness to be in level with the rails, and it will be covered in scalescenes concrete sheeting.

With the 7 point motors all cut down to size, and ready for installing, I started on it today. It took me over 1 hour to get the point motor in place! Then another half hour getting it wired up! Then, it works! It finally works! YAY!!!! This point motor is situated on the other side of platform 3.... thank god it works! lol

Update: You may not have known, but whenever my GC HST was pushing (power car at the end, dummy at the front), the carriage behind the dummy car would derail. Now, its been bugging me why it has happened, but now, I have found out. Under the doorway on the HST, is a dummy knuckle coupling. The hook from the carriage is catching on that, and it is pushing the bogie from the carriage off. The knuckle coupling has been taken off (it just pops out!) and it works perfectly now! Now all thats left is to tidy up the bloomin points! Derailments due to track not in the right place.... dear me! lol

Good news from today:

The 20 conversion continues, a new coat of DRS blue has gone up! And is currently drying. Also, 2 more point motors fitted and wired up (the crossover west side of layout), but the holes need to be bigger, due to the clearance for the pin being to bad

Bad news from today:

I have had some news about my 2 paints I ordered from Railmatch website.... they are not there. The payment has been taken out, but they aren't listening. No telephone number, do address, only an email. I've rung up Model depot, which is where they distribute, and no answer, but a message left. Going to put a thingy into paypal to get my money back. Im going to order the paints from Gaugemaster instead. Also, one of the point motors has seized up, and it is now dead, so going to get a new one tomorrow whilst at Chester. Also (and yes, more bad news) I got a new resistor for the dead signal, and it doesn't work full stop. New signal going to be ordered later on in the week.

Another set of good news from today. Got my 3 eastbound point motors fitted, and started to wire them up. Will continue tomorrow, and will get the final point motor fitted at the weekend (need to do some work on the area underneath first). Also, the DRS 20 paint is going well. Finall main coat going on at 8pm, and then the transfers (not the compass one though, just the 'DIRECT RAIL SERVICES' bit) are going on in the morning. Then I shall continue painting the yellow bits, and wait for my bl**dy paint to arrive. Oh well!
