Edinburgh Junction... Colas 47 and loads more!

Edinburgh Junction

Hiya guys!

Time for my new blog... and I better had explain the layout over here! Right, here goes..........

Edinburgh Junction, is a 00 gauge model railway based near Edinburgh (hence the name). It currently runs on 2 baseboards, making up a 1800x2400mm baseboard. The layout runs on normal Hornby track, with Gaugemaster underlay for better running. The layout has a station, with 5 platforms, a siding/engine shed, and a mainline. The platforms are made from Metcalfe kits, which are really easy to use. The station building is also a Metcalfe product, along with the Parcels office/Waiting room just down the platform. With Platform 1 for the shorter, more local trains such as my 156 and 153, this allows the platform to take upto 3 carriages. Platforms 2 and 3 on the otherhand, are mainly for the mainline, long distance trains such as my 390, and any occasional charter services. This allows any trains upto 4 carriages (not very long, but long enough for the layout).

Platforms 4 and 5 are local service platforms, taking my 2 carriage units, and any locos that want to stable in the loco stabling point oposite platform 5. These platforms curve off from the platform 3 line, then split into two lines going to each of the platforms. These are the only 2 platforms that are terminus platforms.

The mainline is only a formation of 2 tracks, but with platforms 1 and 3 splitting off from the lines, this allows for the trains. The clockwise track, you can access both platforms 2 (on mainline) and 3 (branched off). The anti-clockwise track, you can access the thru line, for passing trains such as the daily ballast train, or speedy passengers (on mainline) and platform 1 (branched off). From platform 1, heading anti-clockwise, you can go straight on, rather than joining the mainline, to go to both the sidings or engine shed.

At one corner of the layout, is a new hill, which will have a tunnel, allowing the mainline to pass through. This is currently being constructed out of plywood, wire mesh, modelling rock and scatter grass. This will be completed by the end of August 2009.

More news, pictures and gossip on the layout will be available from time to time. I will try to update you as much as I can, so dont worry!

I have pictures on flickr, videos on YouTube, and everthing to do with the layout on my website

My gallery is still under construction, so please be patient. But, for loads of photos to keep you going, please click here

Thanks!

Jack :D :D

Another update:

I haven't cut the platform or track, but the platform is glued in place, and the track is tacked down.

So, tinsel around the layout, a big 3f xmas tree by the new platforms, and its all christmasy. Website is now updated, and has changed slightly.

Me and a mate have just filmed a new advert for Edinburgh Junction, using a 'camcorder' unlike my compact cam, and filmed it in 16:9... looks very profesh! lol

Not been an update for some time, so I need to update you viewers.

Today, I purchased a big bottle of WOODLAND SCENICS ballast (one of many) to suit my model railway, and so I could finally ballast my extension hopefully before Christmas. So, with my track now cut and along with the platform, I could finally get some work done. I have placed some cardboard underneath the platform tracks to raise them, so I could get a realistic effect with my ballast, which I have done so. The terminus half of platform 5 is the ballast guinea pig, where I put some ballast out, and placed it where I would want it. To be honest, it looks really good

Regarding the point motors, the 2 curved points will have their motors mounted from underneath, whilst the right hand standard point, will have it mounted on the surface. To cover it up, not using Hornby's base for it, it will be mounted inside a metcalfe signal box, another one, which will have a 'dissused' look about it. It will have a bit that sticks out too at the back that I will modify to allow the point motor to fit in the right way. here is the plan of what it will look like

Hello

Just been looking at your blog, your layouts better than mine i must say! ;) lol

I was Just wondering how you made that signal gantry thats on your layout because it looks very good.

Thanks,

Dave

Hiya Dave!

Thanks for poping in! Much appreciated! It may look better, but everyone is learning, and at some stage, their layout will be as good as any, though there are people who are extremely good at certain things such as jim s-w who's P4 New Street layout is taking detail to the max!

The gantry my friend is Dapol's. Its a plastic kit, and I needed 3 kits to make it. 1 kit can span over 2 tracks, but to make it to 3 track, then you just add half of the other kit to it, so each gantry is 1 and a half kits. Easy to build, but I recommend you use a quick glue such as Loksick (or what ever it is called)....

Hope this helps, and thanks for commenting

Ok, Thanks Jack

I already have 1 Dapol kit, just some more to come then :P

Have you got a picture of your gantry so i can have a look at please, and what colours would you recomend to paint it?

And where did you get the signal heads from to put on them

Also the footbridge spans 3 tracks aswell? Is that a Dapol kit aswell?

Sorry about all the Questions lol

Your welcome Dave!

I can get some pictures for you. I will post them later when I get my camera out. I haven't painted it, and won't, as they are prototypically grey, but usually a darker grey, but this is my first layout, so no worries for me. The footbridge just about spans 3, and sits perfectly on the platforms, though to get it 2 track, the path bit that spans across has 2 breaking points, so break off the 2 small bits and it will span across 2, and don't put the plain piece of plastic in either.... you will know what I mean when you get one. I will be painting it a cream colour.... Its ia Dapol kit too....

Thats ok Dave! Better be safe than sorry.

Been out today to Crewe to meet up with Danny (trainsrgr8), Richard (60maniac), Fred (JZjr) and Luke for some bashing with some DRS locos and what ever else comes in the miserable weather. Caught 47712 'Pride of Carlisle' with 20301 'Max Joule' and 20304, where they were on the 0Z40 from Crewe Gresty Bridge to Barrow Hill, for the tour tomorrow to Hastings and back to Barrow Hill. Then a Freightliner convoy came in that we spotted running around at the Diesel Maintenance Depot south of the station. They were 86612 86610 and 90046... unknown working, but was good to see them. So, appart from loads of bl**dy voyagers, pendos and 350s, nothing else. Saw a 158 in EMT livery, nice it was too, along with a 156 in the blue EMt livery.

My DRS 20/3 conversion can contine (though its stopped atm), as Shawplan have now released the multiple socket thingy in the middle of the 20 cab. Meaning that I need to buy these things to complete it:

RailMatch thinner

Lancaster City Models transfers (the current ones are flaking off - masking tape's problem)

Shawplan cabside window frames (i may not bother)
