Box Signal box

Good evening all,

Does anyone know what was on the Up signal box name board at Box Station ? Was it "Box Signal Box" or purely "Box" as I'm uncertain about this matter and would be very grateful for any help please.

It would have been simply 'Box'. When the first power boxes were built, the words Power Box were added to signify the difference from normal, i.e. manual boxes.

The exception to this was when there were more than one box, in a location. where Level Crossing, East or West etc or in the case of the LNWR boxes in the same area were numbered, for example Stafford Station No 3 Box.

Hope this is useful.

I really don't know where Julie got that idea from. For the cast name plates, the words "x signal box" were the norm on the GWR. This was not always the case before the cast plates appeared, and there were, of course, exceptions.

As to Box, I've found only a single undated photo in Clark's Historical Survey of Selected GW Stations, vol 2. There's a poor copy here. In the book, the cast plate clearly has three words which are almost certainly "Box Signal Box".

Thank you Buffalo, I had a sneaking suspicion I had seen it somewhere in the past and you've confirmed it for me. Now I can move on.........

I knew I could depend on you !
