Rotherham Masborough Station Buildings

Hi, I am new to RMweb, this is my first entry so fingers crossed have done it correctly! I am starting to build a condensed version of Rotherham Masborough station as it was in the late 70's when the MAS scheme had come into play with track simplification but the remains of the old infrastructure still existed.eg Signal boxes before demolition. I just don't have the space to get in the old South Junction with crossovers with 4 lines for the old road and 4 lines curving round past Holmes yard to Sheffield. So I am going for 2 lines on the old road down and 2 lines round to Sheffield, these will continue as a 4 track circuit with access between via the original double crossover in place by the old North Box and additional change over provided in fiddle yard. Modelers license will be applied in order to make the plan work such as line curving left through the station rather than right, but all main structures will be reproduced maybe just not exactly where they should be! I can fit in a shortened 6 sidings Holmes Yard and will have the station platforms long enough to hold a loco and 8 coaches. I have scoured the internet and bought some private photographs and have several pictures of the South Station box and the North one, the 3 bridges that will be built and Holmes Yard. I also have some pictures of the station buildings but these are lacking in detail around the staircase. If anyone has any pictures of the station in close up rather than in the distance behind trains these would be of interest to me.

As it stands I am just getting the boards up - these are 80% done now - just the lift out section around the door to do. The layout will be 00 gauge using Peco code 75 electrofrog and will be 16ft x 11ft. I sold off all my previous N gauge stuff several years ago and have been collecting some 00 gauge locos and stock in preparation for when the railway room was finished. The loft room is now finally finished and this autumn I hope to make a good start on track laying and wiring. This will take a long time as away from home with work a fair bit. Control will be via DCC and loco's will be sound fitted.

If anyone can help re Station or has any links I have not discovered then I give advance thanks.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy,

I for one will watch your progress with great interest as I spent many hours as a lad on Masborough, watching the seemingly endless procession of freight down the Old Main Line interspersed with Peaks, 47's and Lincoln Units on passenger workings. Happy days indeed!

I often managed to get a ride in the Holmes Yard 08 and on a few occasions aboard 20's on trip workings.

My parents lived in Kimberworth from 1973-81 and Grandparents in Greasborough until they passed away.

Anyway enough reminiscence, best of luck with your project.

Regards,

Andy.

Hi

I spent many a happy hour at Masborough and remember seeing a HST (set 253017 from memory) on the old road going south. My mother is from Rotherham and I used to stay with my Grandad in the holidays spending my time on a Rail Rover.

As a teenager I did try to build Sheffield Midland in OO in a similar space but ran out of money before I could get all the track. I managed platforms 5 - 8 plus the bays at the north end.

Cheers

Paul

Got two messages but only seem to be able to add one comment-new remember! I used to pass through Masborough on the way to Sheffield from in the early 80's, used to then get the bus to Tinsley( 2 pence PTE subsidised). Used to always look out for stuff in yard and watch freight going by on 4 track section out of front of DMU when going by Masborough! When a bit older spent time getting off there for a bit to watch stuff and even went with a mate in the late 80's when closed but with loads of freight still and NESW loco hauled trains still. When looking for a place to model this seemed ideal as plenty of interest for freight and passenger, yard and looking back to the late 1970's the station and surroundings looked great - almost like a heritage line when you look back on it. So I will crack on and likely post some pics of progress, but it will be slow!! Cheers Andy

I would like to follow your progress with interest also ?

I am from Rotherham originally ( Kimberworth Area ) and Masboro' was always my local ? and ironically my first shift as a permanent way engineer was undertaken in Masborough Station !

Good luck :-)

Not been on for a while, thanks for last comment. Got a fair bit of the track down now and have been installing point motors and wiring up. I will try and figure out how to add some pics. Was away with work last week and then next week and away at the weekend - I did know progress would be slow but at least have got started!

I'm originally from Rotherham, I also spent a lot of time at Masbro' in the period 1973 - 81.

Would like to see some progress pics if you have any?
