Sproston - signalbox progress

Hello again, well the weather has become more reasonable for modelling, so I decided to make an attempt at advancing the construction of Sproston's signalbox.

This has been sitting partly madeup on my little workbench/ folding picnic table for some time, and after reading through the many posts on RMweb of RSLR (Reece), I have been galvanised into action...adding the courses of engineers blue brick around windows, doors and on the edges of the structure, adding the glazing and painting the rest.

I originally wanted to have the operating floor door open, but it is moulded as one piece, and I baulked at cutting it out, as the doorframe is so very fine.

Have now reached the stage of being ready to paint the upper framework around the windows and the guttering/facia.

I am however still short of a couple of important internal details, namely a whitemetal casting of a WR key-token machine,(or a single line electric train staff instrument.) along with the cupboard it sits on, the signalmans armchair, and possibly another cupboard for the box.

I do not think it wise to continue much further with construction, until I can source said items...

Unfortunately the Wills ssam 103 kit I used had its casting for the all important chair missing- and it also does not contain a token machine (reading through Reece's posts, I see that he used the Springside internal detail kit, which is for a larger box but does contain all these items - and even an electric train staff instrument to boot!!) - This was clearly a false economy on my part!!

To buy a complete new detailing kit seems rather o.t.t ... The box is already almost finished internally, It does not appear to be possible to buy the required parts individually....

So being an old skinflint...., I wondered if any kind folk on RMweb who have bought the Springside kit, but maybe have no need for either a WR electric token instrument on its cupboard - or an electric train staff instrument( or even the armchair!!) in their signalbox might be prepared to pass it my way where they will be correctly painted and given a good home...I will obviously pay postage, etc.

Still have the roof to deal with, along with the Staircase and all the final small details. I hope to add internal led lighting (eventually), so it has to be made removable.

I was wondering what other folk used for the signalbox nameboard lettering?? (Slaters lettering??

I assume that the correct BR (WR) title on it would be: "SPROSTON STATION SIGNALBOX"

Would appreciate any guidance on this matter.

Thanks

Regards

SIGTECH (Steve)

Very nice work, Steve. I do like the way you've painted the brick work. Is this a scratchbuild or is it a kit, please?

As for the W.R. token instrument (technically known as a Tyers No. 9, I believe), it is relatively straightforward to scratchbuild a fair representation from building up layers of plasticard and filing to shape, when all laminations are set. Annealing some thin brass wire and compressing one end can give you a representation of the individual key tokens, and a further bit of plasticard painted black can represent the base. You ought to be able to get the dimensions on the internet or maybe ask if you can measure one at a heritage railway?

Hi Steve, lovely work on that box, I do find myself projects like this are very therapeutic for the mind.

Best regards & happy modelling

Hello guys - thank you both for your very kind comments,

Captain Kernow. The box is a just a standard Ratio 552 GWR brick signalbox kit,I believe it is based on Buckfastleigh on what used to be called The Dart Valley Railway, - now known as The South Devon - my modelling is not yet up to scratchbuilding standards such as RSLR(Reece).

The bricks are moulded very well on this kit, making it easy to flow thinned matt 34 white into the mortar lines, the engineering bricks were picked out with matt 77 navy blue and bricks are matt 70 (all paints are Humbrol). Thanks also for the ideas for an E.K.T. machine.

Craig. Thanks,it's slowly taking shape, probably the final building required for Sproston.

Hello Steve,

Tis all looking ansom, you've done a lovely job on your bricks and the interior! Think I've posted on your 'question' topic with some details, hopefully Springside will be able to help you with your extra parts you require. I'd recommend having a look at some of their other items while your on there you might like to get a couple of extra bits... they do some very nice station name boards, lamps etc too!

In regards to Signal Box name plates Cooper Craft do a kit for the cast type which includes a large amount of different letters etc and you get a number of extra boards in the kit, I think they're about

Hi Reece, thanks for your kind comments and for the link to the Coopercraft site - that's exactly what I need! - seems like the signalbox nameboard is sorted then. - Will  have a look at the other goodies on there, along with a visit to Springside Models too, and then Dart Castings for the 'moggies'!.- Lots to do now when I finish this run of night shifts....

Regards,

Steve.
