Ch-ch-ch-changes

Now and then I like to revisit a bit of the layout if it isn't quite working for me. Although I was pleased with this culvert scene when I finished it, over time it began to nag at me that the arrangement of bridge, retaining wall and culvert in such close proximity was a little contrived ...

In addition there was something about the general lay of the land on the embankment to the right of the culvert which didn't entirely convince ... as well as seeming to get in the way of all of the good camera angles. I was also unhappy about the contour of the fascia board framing this scene, so if I was going to change one I might as well change the other ...

Over the weekend I removed the culvert (intact, so it can be re-used elsewhere if the need arises) and rebuilt the landform to give a more gentle transition from the bridge to the embankment. In doing so, I decided to lose the ability to swap out this area of scenery (it had been removable orginally) as the options for doing anything very different seemed a bit limited anyway. There's also the question of the march of time - the whole module has taken far longer than originally planned, and I'll be happy just to be able to swap the railway infrastructure of platforms and buildings, without worrying too much about the surrounding scenery.

It's not a dramatic difference but when looking at the module as a whole, the landforms seem to flow more naturally. Now to crack on with adding fences and smaller details.

Looks much more believable now Al - very nice.  And the overbridge is fairly timeless anyway form the late 19th century onwards.

The girders are actually removable, and with a little modification the Peco equivalents (with the curved top profile) fit nicely in place, so there's scope for varying the look of the bridge.

The grassy bank looks wonderful!  It does not need anything more to make a convincing scene except, perhaps, the boundary fence, as you mention.

Big improvement Al and well worth the time and effort!  Just goes to prove the adage "less is often more"

Thanks all. Incidentally, that embankment uses up the last of the Silflor grass sheets I bought when doing Cogirep, back in 2007. Good stuff, just a pity it isn't easier to find.

Wow Al. That second shot in particular! Reminds me why I love model railways.
