At last! A solution to our grass problem

Early on we decided to cover the front and back of the layout, most of the actual scenery, with carpet underlay. This produced a good effect, especially with a little bit of effort. It did, however, leave us with a dilemma about the middle of the layout. We tried a few different techniques for the ground cover round the various sidings, static grass, ground foam, but these didn't really produce the effect we wanted. There was too much contrast between the different materials and the change in colour certainly didn't help.

Yesterday we decided to cover the problem areas with carpet underlay to match the rest of the layout. We started by removing the lift out sections from the back so that they would be easier to work on and not get glued in place.

A thick layer of pva and an oversized bit of underlay later...

Once that was in place and drying with went on to other projects. Les painted some Scale Link etched plants and applied ivy to a hedge.

Chris glued coal to our coal piles.

And I painted the roof of the large clay dry.

Before disassembling everything I posed some recently completed stock by the small dry.

Thanks for posting this, very inspirational landscaping. The Scalelink plants look fantastic. I had noticed them in their catalogue but never thought it would work. Your painting shows just what can be done with them, very convincing.

Is the hedge rubberized horsehair like your other bushes? It looks just right.

The problem with the Scalelink plants is that they are 2D. Even when painted well they don't look that good on their own. By planting them behind each other the 3D effect can be created.

Yes the hedge is horsehair. it has been painted, grey primer first followed by picking out branches with paints from the Lifecolor weathered wood set.

Looks like that grass is going to fit nicely there. Love the roof of the clay dry! Very realistic. Did you scratch build the entire thing?  Also is this O gauge?  (Sorry I'm a bit of a newcomer here! ;D )

Yes it's all scratchbuilt. I didn't do it all personally. I started and then let other people take over although I have taken it back over to finish the painting. It's EM gauge.
