N Gauge Ivatt progress: Test runs around Kinlet Town

Tracing work on Victoria Bridge continues, slowly, for now, more along the lines of 'playing with trains!'

I had worried that by putting the smaller, scale, smokebox (of Dapol origins) on the front of the already featherweight Minitrix Ivatt, I might turn its adhesive properties from hopeless to somewhat worse. To keep the weight up, I retained as much of the original metal in the boiler casing as I could, and kept the weight from inside the Dapol smokebox. I think this smaller weight was made from pretty dense stuff, as with the 'facelift' the model seems to be a better hauler than in its original form.

'46443' (soon to be, when I get some transfers!) will happly haul four, maybe five carriages, as seen here.. note the motion blur, no cheating ;)

A couple more pictures of the facelifted loco being exercised on Wyre Forest MRC's excellent 'Kinlet Town' layout. At this point the bodywork was still sitting a little 'nose high' on the chassis, this has since been remedied with some gentle internal dremel surgery to the metal weights!

Currently working on a set of N gauge GWR 'toplight' carriages, which is also progressing nicely.

I had the Minitrix version of that loco, it was what finally killed "N" gauge for me. It derailed every time it went over a point boiler first, had little haulage power, and the valvegear and wheels were so far over scale as to be horrendous.

A horrid little thing.

A horrid little thing.

I like a challenge

One job that needs doing is simply toning down the chunky valve gear with a suitable greasy black paint, to make it stand out a little less... this will do wonders. I have also figured out some more ways to add more weight around the front buffer beam. Remember that the original's lack of pulling power is all down to lack of weight. I have seen the the same chassis, with a nice heavy 009 metal body on top, transformed into a superpower!!

It is an interesting comparison, during my pulling power experiments the other day the poor Ivatt was seen to struggle with five carriages.. at the same time my metal bodied Farish Standard tank ran rings around it pulling 14 with plenty left in reserve....
