The first milestone is reached (one Pacer car detailed)...

It might not look like much but I feel I've reached a milestone this evening...

At this rate it's a good thing I'm building just a single line terminus! Nevertheless the first car of my Pacer is at a point where it can be painted.

Full side on view showing overall progress to date!

Work has been quite extensive - perhaps not as far as some have gone, but I've chosen to work on the things that will make the largest visual difference.

On the front ends I've replaced the handrails, added the roof aerial, replaced the fender, added a coupling (with pipework) and fabricated replacement steps.

On the back I've added a replacement exhaust stack (that links down to the underside of the floor) and support brackets (fiddly).

In addition, and as can be seen in the photos, I've re-wheeled her for P4, modified the wheelset framing (to represent the heavier duty spring bases) and worked a little on the interior, as well as adding full door handrails using .45 and .35mm wire.

Next up is bringing the second car up to scratch before I put them through the paint booth to appear as 142036 in Northern livery... unless I'm distracted by the Mainline 58 or new sound class 37 over Christmas! :)

Hi James,

looking good. I've had a similar project on the drawing board for a while so it's nice to see one in progress. Where are you planning to source the purple for the Northern livery? I haven't managed to turn up a manufacturer yet.

You're joking aren't you? Compared to what I've achieved this week you're positively flying! :P ;)

It seems like we are working at a similar pace then Martin! James that work is just stunning, and that BSI coupler is just...wow! What did you use for the exhaust pipe, by the way? I've got a set to do for my 150

Thanks chaps! :) It feels slow to me - maybe I'm comparing myself to Jon!!

Funny when you take photos you notice things - the front lamp iron has fallen off!!

I'm probably going to have to mix my own purple I think - I'll be using Humbrol oil paints - I'll let you know how I get on and what colours I need plus rough proportions for the mix.

The BSI couple is plasticard sanded and filed. It's laminated up from several layers cut to shape as I built it up. The exhaust pipe is a plastic cocktail stick - I was struggling to find anything in the house the right diameter! I heated it over the hob to put the kink in. It's got a length of regular layout wiring wire attached to the bottom, and the support is again just plasticard. The brackets are microstrip superglued to the cocktail stick. Hope that helps!

Looks really good. will have to give that method a try for my bratchel 150 (not to mention my pacer.)

Looking really good James - I like the use of staples on the interior seating as it creates a depth of realism and great attention to detail by you. I will be interested to see the finished article as the Northern Livery suits the pacer quite well.

Keep up the good work!

Thought that would probably be the case with the paint, would be great if you could do that. :)

This really is starting to look the part, what a difference those seat backs make! I've apparently 'misplaced' one car of my pacer unit over the years, time to check Ebay.

The seatbacks are a little higher than the prototype as I think really I should have carved off the thin bit at the top of the mouldings - however they will be lower than what you see hear when the glazing is back in as this holds them down.

I'm tempted to get a coat of white primer on her this weekend and paint the chassis all black to see how she looks!

I've also just realised I'll need to split the exhaust pipework to remove the body! I glued it all together in my excitement last night - only a small job to put back once she's finished though :) Must remember to add the lamp bracket before I spray her.
