Customising the blog

I have quite liked the new format of the blog feature here. Although I have been a blogger before, the idea of replacing a forum topic with a blog did seem a bit strange at first.

As a "mixed up modeller" when I have had several layouts, hence topics on the go, I have confused myself let alone others, with cross posts. Now with a single blog it is all in one place, its more a journal of my modelling than individual projects.

After reading some posts and blogs I have now takien on board the idea of a blog index, see top right of this page. Each blog post is now linked in sections relating to the layout it is about. Hopefully this will make reading easier.

You may notice that one of my layouts is getting much more attention at the moment, but the others will get their day !!

As to wether blogs are generally more popular than topics, that remains to be seen. At the moment this blog is atracting viewers but not amny comments, its always hard to tell if that is down to the format or the content !?!?!

Good to see another blog adopting this approach to indexing :) As another "mixed up modeller" I've found it works reasonably well in organising the different topics that would otherwise be lost in the depths of a forum topic. The main thing that some of us are now beginning to worry about is what happens when the index gets much longer -- can it be too long, and will the blog need a two-level index?

I try and comment on the blogs I enjoy just as I would have done in the old forum with a topic. In a similar way I also try and rate the blogs I enjoy. However there will be some members who just wish to read what has been written (there is nothing wrong with that though in the slightest) and the fact that the comments are on a separate page means that it is slightly harder to spark debate. I know it is not much effort to click on a link to see what other people have commented or to make a comment about a blog but my findings in the past are that if it requires effort i.e. a click, then it wont be done as often. Still I like the new format and I am sure over time more comments will be made. I must also applaud your blogging on the layouts. I have always kept a keen eye on your projects and to have them in one place is good, so at least from me you can rest assured that it is not your content causing the lack of comments.

I'm a fan of the blogs, combined with the blog index it makes it much easier to find posts. It's by far the best solution for someone like you as I can find all you stuff far more easily than if you had a different thread for each layout - and one thread for the number of layouts you've got would be a bit messy!

Thanks for the feedback, I guess a lot of the blog vs topic issue is down to what people know and are used to. I do like the ability to see "Latest Visitors" even without commets being left at least you get a sense that it is worth posting and that people are reading. I think in time blogs will become more popular as it is a more user friendly format.
