73118 progression and a look back

73118 has progressed well its hard to beleive that the year will be over now in just over half a month! I think 2009 has been a good year for models for me, the introduction of some models has been quite pleasing!

my old workbench thread is here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=24431&p=497015&hilit=+158757#p497015 to show that im not a three model wonder   its hard to beleive my detailing work wasnt as good as it is now; compare the pictures of 73107, to 73118 and you may see what I mean!

Back to the 73, the majority of the fiddly work has been done, the bulk of the Scharfenburg couplings has been done, with Hornby class 60 buffers added, which in my view for any type of loco that has these type of buffers, the Hornby items are a must simply being much finer than the Shawplan equivalent ( sorry Brian! ), Hurst models' superb EPs tunnel logos have nicely finnished off the models appearance as Lima never included these on the model! the trickiest part was adding the smallest of the logos which only needed a light misting of glue and thankfully theyve stayed on so far ...

the glazing for Limas model I think is OK, but I think South easternfinecasts' Flush glazing is an improvement, as well as the Railmatch Lithoplan headcodes ( but I think they look too big?! ). still to do are the awful looknig horns! but im not sure who else does these as apart from Markits whic hI think look a bit too fine for me, and possibly tackling the roof fan grill as well, then theres the modifyed jumpers which I dont seem to be having much luck finding replacments for  ...

Also im currently working on a couple of Dapol MCA wagons, by replacing the chunky handwheels with Hurst models items, which IMHO do look much better than the Dapol effort. There is missing wiring on the underside of the wagon but im not sure what is/isnt misiing at the moment so Hopefully some research may be fruitious?? Ill post up pictures hopefully soon of the wagons in progress

Thats all for now :D

Nice to see someone else tackling the deficiencies of the LIMA underframe (in other words, I'm relieved that I'm not the only obsessive out there), it really does make a significant difference to the look of the model. I don't agree with you on the SEF glazinf necessarily, but that's a general problem with vac' formed glazing which never looks as good as handcut pieces carefully made to fit - it does eradicate the moulded wipers however...

A1 should do some suitable turned brass horns for the 73 - I've used their horns on my SR EMUs.

I'm surprised that nobody does a set of cast replacement underframe gear for the Lima/Hornby 73. It does make a massive difference.

Thanks for the comments guys!

James theres a good photo that shows the front of the Shcarfenburg coupling taken at the Barry island railway on Fotopic ( when it works! ), there is this one also at: http://newimages.fotopic.net/?iid=yo542w&noresize=1&nostamp=1&quality=85

Thanks for the Comment Modfather, shall get some more work done soon, as some parts need filing etc to get them neater looking!

Adam think it was your thread that inspired me  your 73 model is superb! althoguh I dont think my detailnig will ever match as good! The SEC glazing was my only other option asides from the Lima glazing which the side windows have an extra moulded window frame which looks odd seeing as the bodyshell has it moulded on too?!

some tommorrow from MG sharp, as ive used the Marktis ones before and found them wayy to thin looking

it is a shame none of the detailnig manufacturers like Shawplan, Hurst etc, do any cast replacement parts, as donig the underframe is a time consuming exercise, well as is all modellnig I guess  , worth it though in the end id say!

The first proverbial Brick wall has been hit!

with the unavailibility of A7302, which is the Class 73 Air horns from A1 Models, a Fruitless Ebay search has ensured that the bodyshell detailing will have to come to a halt for now ..

Hopefully tonight when I get home more progress on the Underframe, and Sharfenburg couplings will be made though B)

I'm not quite sure what you mean about the "extra moulded frame"? The glazing does have a representation of the rubber seal around the window, but I don't remember there being one on the bodysides (or anywhere else). The only real issue with those windows on the sides is that the aperture is a bit too large, so I made it smaller which wasn't a problem since mine was going to be re-painted. Clear plastic sheet and a steady hand is always an option - and if done right will be flat, which the SEF inserts aren't.

my mistake, where the flush glazings been fitted the illusion that theres a window seal, has been created! I think its where Lima didnt spray the insides of the darker grey, which gives that impression, I did think of having a go at glazing myself, but after past attempts my confidence has gone down but I may give it a go for the cab bulkheads maybe and see how I get on with that! The SEF inserts also as well I find have that rather odd "underwater" effect when you Look through them
