Girders

Having built some of the station building I now need to hold it up. So I have made a start on the girders for its frame and Benalder st bridge.

They are styrene sheet, the curved stanchions being cut on the silhouette. Not sure if it shows well on the photo but there is a gap between the curved ends and the horizontal angle irons, a visible feature of the prototype. I prevaricated about the rivets. I have tried various methods over the years, all were very fiddly and difficult to get consistent in any quantity. I therefore decided to have a go with the "Archers" waterslide type, having read favourable comments about them on various forums. They require care in terms of cutting out and application but being waterslide they do go into angle joints.

Here is a pic of one in an unfinished state, it will be interesting to see how visible they are when it is painted.

That looks very impressive already, Dave. And time consuming, but no doubt well worth it.

I'm quite satisifed myself with the Archer's rivet transfers. One thing I've found is that it's a good idea to do a small test piece for every new project to see if the rivets come out as planned once painted. I do this because on one project they looked fine until I painted them, at which point I realized that a slightly larger size would have worked better. This can be hard to judge before painting.
