scenics started...

Evening all,

Following the decision to drop Thurso and move the Exeter mock up to the garage has allowed me to refocus and concentrate on the one project again - Meeth.

Having wired it at the last entry this weekend saw the installation of the backscene former. I decided to crack on and glue it in place as otherwise I would have faffed about  I am in two minds whether to do a plain blue sky backdrop or use a digital photo as per Kyle. I did find a photo of a Meeth landscape last week on a local estate agents guff for selling a property - I will undertake some trials with that.

This weekend saw the track primed first in grey car primer and then sprayed with a track colour (weathered sleepers) bought recently at a show...however, whilst I was expecting brown it appears to be more a grey colour...not sure how this will look with grey ballast - that needs a rethink

The scenery contours were then formed in 1mm white card to get the rough profiles. Looking at the prototype, there is a gentle slope to the rear with some profiled ground to the front. On top of this I applied a layer of Sculptamold, which I always use since ‘Missy’ Julia tipped me off about it a few years ago. Nice stuff to work with and whilst perhaps not as smooth as Pollyfilla it can be sanded afterwards.

Finally the railheads have been cleaned up and I will retest trains next week.

Next job will probably be to apply some brown paint to the land forms and start with a base of static grass.

Here’s a few pics of progress...

Good to see your progress, Pete. You can always fiddle with track colour at a later stage.

Anything with a Rat, green or blue, is absolutely fine by me!

What has happened to Thurso I did check back though some of your posts but couldn't see it.

I was tempted by it myself to have a go.

I am afraid it is no more...it is a dead Thurso...expired and gone to meet it’s maker ;)http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/1909/entry-20421-end-of-the-lineliterally/

Ah... snow scene eh?

Seriously, good to see you moving forward with this. I hope your track runs smoothly but my experience is that track usually works much better before you paint it and it takes some perseverence to get it back to the same level of reliability afterwards, so stick with it!

Backscene-wise, your horizon looks pretty low so I'd think that some representation of the local scene would be the best bet.

Regards, Andy

Many thanks Andy - glad I am not the only one whose track takes a backwards step after painting/ballasting

Yes I tend to agree with you that it needs more than just a blue sky...I will print a test of the picture I have at work today and start a few dry runs...I recall it took a while for me to get the Kyle one in place...

Coming along nicely Pete. You could always try some powders for the track weathering like TomE has done on his Ropley layout.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Great progress Pete... ;)

Hope that mojo is back on board now?

Nice to see the Class 25... Remember the class double headed at Wellingborough as a spotty teenager! ;)

Look forwards to further progress....

Cheers,

Mark

Many thanks Mark,

Yes mojo is topped up again - 25 (and 31) will need sound chips to make this a bit more exciting...;)

Very nice. Can I ask what thickness the ply is?

Julia's advice was always good. I hope she'll return some day.

Thanks Mikkel - it’s all 3mm ply...which feels strong enough to me.

Yep...still see Julia at shows so it’s good to have a catch up :)

Thanks for the info, Pete. Glad to hear Julia is still modelling. I followed her other blog and thought she might have stopped altogether.

Love the ply box - another IKEA conversion, Pete? Careful, neat work as always.
Many thanks Mike - no it’s just hand drawn boards on CAD and laser cut at work...

Your welcome Mikkel - no Julia is still doing stuff and just writes to that blog I think :good:
