My Car Died

DCB

After 17 years of ownership, 200 000 miles plus and journeys to Lands End and John O' Groats, my 1998 Rover 420 Si has succumbed to terminal head gasket failure. Its like a death in the family and I'm quite upset

Sympathies. My Pug 406 went the same way after almost 15 years in May. My kids couldn’t remember us having another car and still point out whenever we see or pass one.

The upside is how much the driving experience has improved since the old car was designed. I miss it, but I’m not completely convinced I’d go back to it.

I lost my Rover 214Si (1993, 238K miles) in Nov 2016.  The head gasket lasted till about 180K miles.  Can you get it fixed?  An independent garage may not be as expensive as you think (mine cost about 200 -250 notes, maybe 5 years ago).  If the rest of the car is ok then it's worth a thought.

No Polybear, I would have done the gasket myself but there too many other faults to be worth trying to fix it,

Follow our government's advice, strip out the old lump and install an old Hornby XO4 in its place, as they want us all to be driving electric cars very soon, you can get ahead of the game. Upgrade to a Portescap if you find the running a little rough or even go for a new DCC controller on the dashboard...
