Another mad-cap scheme... or the lure of the Judith Edge kit!

I've long held a fascination with parts of the Manchester Ship Canal railway, the stub at Ellesmere Port and the network around Trafford Park. In the early days of planning Paxton Road it was a line that inspired some early sketches as to what this could look like and gave some direction to a layout that has gradually evolved into a completely different area and subject! Such is modelling fiction.

A chance browsing of this forum and seeing Halfwit's blog on the Steelman Royale taking shape and I found myself back on Fotopic searching out the snaps of the Manchester Ship Canal railway's Sentinel shunters.

I've not build a proper etched brass kit before - only brass chassis packs and one white-metal kit in my teens. I'm a little apprehensive about taking the plunge but a speculative email has been sent off to Judith Edge to check kit availability.

So where does this project fit with all the others? Paxton Road is going to still be finished. Most of my modern stock will stay OO and for now this will be a great layout to use them on. Rose Hill is a foray into P4 and is proving to be worthwhile in polishing my whole range of layout building skills and I'm really enjoying it. Neither is the place for a Sentinel...

Leading us to the only sensible outcome! A third layout - probably in 2011, probably VERY small (1x4 or so) to fit in my study. DCC and P4 so the Sentinel can be fitted with lights (and sound maybe?!) and P4 to try my hand at point building.

In the meantime we'll see whether a box from Judith Edge arrives - and if I can keep it shut long enough to finish the other layouts!

Beware of the captions to those photos - "Emily" is a Barclay, rebuilt by LH and conssequently carrying Hunslet plates. The MSC railway also had 0-6-0 Sentinels plus a variety of Hudswells, some of which might be kits in the fullness of time.

Make sure you show us your progress with the kit, I assume that its the 4w version that you've ordered. Am I right in thinking that it can be made to run on a Black Beetle? Also note the cab doors in the photo, I think some locos were modified during their lives as the sliding doors tended to seize...

I have a Nonneminstre Sentinal (whitemetal body on a spud) waiting to be stripped and re-sprayed.

I'm pretty sure Judith Edge have done the Steelman Royale for a Beetle , though the original 4 wheel Sentinel is intended for a chassis (Guess what I have lurking the cupboard, amongst the main "first loco kits")

I think that the chain driven Sentinel is designed for a Tenshodo motor bogie. I guess Michael can confirm!? I'm wanting it in P4 so not sure where that leaves me!

Tenshodo bogies are easy to re-gauge, just a question of stripping down and changing the wheelset. I did one on the old rmweb, not sure if it can be accessed at the moment.

The Steelman Royale and the Vangaurd both run on Black Beetles.

You can build the 4wh sentinel on a Black Beetle and the instructions originally mentioned this. However, after I had done one it involved cutting away so much of the BB that I removed all references to it. They are much better than the Tenshodo and you can get them with correct sized wheels. P4 shouldn't make any difference, the Sentinel frames are wide enough.

So that's good to know - Michael - thankyou for your support on this blog! :) When you're back from your holiday I have one or two last questions I shall email to you before I make my purchase (just a few beginner questions on best tools and the wheel base and size requirements so I can order the motor bogie).

Thanks everyone for your help and support - you're responsible for a third layout idea getting off the ground (slowly).

Was not sure whether to post here or on the *another distraction* blog.

M.S.C. had an (ex?)GWR(?) Toad brake van which is preserved on Gloucester docks complex. I took photos when I was there last year and will try to post in the Gallery since I can not do so here.

It would make a nice pairing with the Sentinel (assuming that they ran together in real life!)

Thanks Don! :)

I envision a couple of TTA tankers, a couple of SSA scrap wagons all weathered and work-worn with faded battered appearance (my usual fare), along with an old Vanfit or something like that to be used as a tool van. I'm going to model the Sentinel with air brakes so the brake van could be another relic that is moved about from time to time.

My mind is in overdrive at the moment. I wondered if I could do a DCC controlled roller shutter door on the workshop as well! :)

Don - many thanks!

These look great - I don't usually go for stuff like this but I reckon it might make a nice touch, and be especially evocative of the prototype so worth including to generate some real atmosphere :)

For a photo taken by me it is surprisingly sharp!!

If you do decide to model it, a PM gets you the full size file. All the markings are legible.
