Mk2F DBSO Conversion

I wanted to do a fleet of these DBSOs - modelling the differences in the prototypes as they run today. I was somewhat phased by the amount of work involved in doing the conversions but, I thought, printing all the parts so that they would go together pretty cleanly using existing moulded shut lines would make things easier.

I created kits of parts for each variant:

  • 9701/9714 in Network Rail with generator and the UV lamp front brackets
  • 9702/9703 with the wider centre window and no generator
  • 9708 in Network Rail with generator and the UV lamp front brackets
  • 9707 (and the rest of the DRS fleet) with the different light layout to the NR versions
  • 9711 (and the other Anglia/Intercity variants)

I designed the cab to be a one piece replacement and the additional separate details to convert the coaches (shrk fin aerials, extra rovac vents, new cab vent, fuel tanks, air reservoirs....) and the snowplough with buffer beam detail moulded in to fit a NEM pocket.

Also with the glazing, I used the clear plastic packaging from a wills kit, cut to size glued in with a beading of glue n glaze, once dried, filled in the recess with glue n glaze up on end until dried clear. Had trouble with sinkage previously.

I had another go at 9701 now that I have Bachmann's versions. I went to more detail on the window frames and sized them much more like Bachmann's. I also took a new approach to the UV lights and console. This time I printed these separately to fit later. On 9708 I had to detail the cab and then fit it, ready painted to the ready painted body. Because I think I can now add the LEDs tot eh bracketed and insert them and the console after I could do it later! I can also now choose to fit it or not.

These window frames with a DRS front end could be a winner?!

Beautiful work there!

I had meant to ask what do you glaze them with!

What paint do you use for the Anglia turquoise?

Trying to find the time to do that model! Hopefully during October!

Here’s the first attempt. Not much to change I don’t think…. at least until I have a donor I hand!

Well, it had passed me by, but, I just saw LSL with their push-pull Scotrail rake using 9707. So, that has gone straight on the list!! I plan on using a Bachmann Inter-city body and replacing the front only, not the whole cab for this. It will also, therefore, work for the DRS versions as mentioned by @Melton Works

Trial print in play:

Whilst I was at it I thought I'd try and convert a Bachmann NR to generator fitted. I believe I have found a decent paint match so plucked up the courage to hack the expensive one! I plan on just replacing the very centre piece of the cab - holes are wires for the wiring of the UV lights. Looks like it's easier to replace the wind deflectors this way rather than trying to keep the originals....

Trying out the NR generator fill in bits on the earlier Inter City shell - convenient check of the front cab cutout!

If only I’d had a scotrail original DBSO, I reckon I could have done this and only needed to paint the front!

A touch over exuberant with the file. I reckon I’m about 1/3 of a mm too wide. The good news is I can print another slightly wider!!

I also thought I’d try a different approach on the cab window. As I will be fitting the UV brackets I am first going to see if I can mask the joins with that and not replace as much:

Glued and touched in. I didn’t use any filler as I think it should cover pretty well with brackets and wiring. The brackets will be pre fitted with the LEDs before they go on. The window is the same size as the “secondary” window that was behind the main cab in the original model so that glazing will be reused for the cab window!

I also managed to print some emergency stop windows and add them too

Well I have found this on here if you want to repaint...

Falcon Grey: Pantone 412
Rail White: Pantone 441
InterCity Executive Light Grey: Pantone 452
Rail Red: British Standard BS381C/593 'Rail Red'
Warning Panel Yellow: BS4800/08E51.

The Railtec Regional railways blue stripe will do the job.

I dont know if they have gone but Bachmann-spares.co.uk had some Scotrail DBSO spare bodyshells not so long ago.

Thanks for this! I ended up going black and not grey as LSL appear to have done that from what I can tell!

I did check with Bachmann - all sold out of Scotrail bodies.

Still needs more detailing and a bit more micro sol on the stripes but, now I have completed the electrics too.

I’d started with a non-DCC intercity DBSO. I picked up the bits to make it DCC off of Bachmann but I removed the headlight board. In place I have used 2mm towers including bi-colours for the marker/rear. I then took the DCC track power from the roof PCB and added a second function only chip so it has the full independent headlights and markers as well as the compartment lighting:

Forgive the pictures - taken in low light!

What a time to spot my light clusters are too high!! I need to get the 607 numbering between the light cluster and the window frame....grrrrr.....

Link to comment

Well, that ws one of those errors you make when you're rushing! I knew the clusters were lower but forgot to drop them when I modified my model. Here we go with the new version:

1411600599_9707LSLDBSOV2.PNG.7274b3123b6a744e35abeea632ba6e36.PNG

The good news is I think I can just cut the printed end off and graft the new one on. If I test fit and then paint and glaze on the bench then it should just be a case of a bit of fill and a yellow touch up on the join. I may just have to extend an LED wire to get them to fit again.

I will probably lose some of the blue/white lining when I mask but it should be fine....I was thinking that my yellow end needs to go back a bit further along the side anyway. I was also slightly unhappy with how I prepared the end for painting - some print lines were still showing!!
