August 2023 - upgrading a Bachmann 32-936 Class 150 270 Regional Railways to 2014 spec

A bit of a quicky project.

On ebay many years ago I picked up a Bachmann 32-936 Class 150 270 in Regional Railways livery with the handy destinations of York and Leeds. So represents workings via Harrogate or Garforth.

Been an early model this has the motor car with the massively over engineered chassis and hence no interior. This was corrected on the 2014 upgraded model where the Bachmann have modelled the single bogie drive system found on the Farish Class 150, or used the Class 101/105/108/Derby Lightweight drive system, driving a single bogie. This allows the motor car to have a 2/3 interior and interior lighting in both cars.

While noseying around EBay found a 32-927 Class 150 202 in Centro livery for a good price. So managed to win it. You can guess what I’ve done next… basically swap the bodies over! This captures the process, and shows how it’s not that simple…

Firstly, the motor and dummy car cab interiors are different between the 2009 and 2014 versions.

2009 on the left and 2014 version on the right.

But thankfully they still fit in the same way in the bodyshell.

So these needed swapping over.

The is the motor car chassis difference for powering the head / tail lights.

2009 version takes power from some contact pads on the PCB to get power to the lights on the underframe beneath the cab.

Just to show the 2014 version of the motor chassis, this is the difference. A much neater arrangement. The 2009 chassis is in the background.

This is dummy car chassis which similar shows the interior lighting arrangements.

As an said prior to doing the bodyshell swap, I checked the Centro Unit and found a huge amount of hair wrapped around the motor bogie wheelsets…

It run so much better after this removed!

Overall, a worthwhile project because it’s brought 150 270 out to the standard of the Realtrack Class 144, Class 156, EFE class 143 / 144 and Bachmann 158 in terms of interior lighting.

Problem is what to do with the Centro Class 150 202? That never operated around West / North Yorkshire. So do I eBay it or keep it because I like BREL York built Class 150s…Answers on a post card…

although is anyone has a pair of Regional Railways 150/2 they want to swap for Centro ones let in touch…

That's a nice clear description of the work involved.

For anybody tempted to try fitting a 150/2 body onto a 2009 150/1 chassis, it doesn't quite work.  The 150/1 cab interior mouldings are very similar to the 150/2s shown, but have a very slight curve on the front edge of the driver's desk.  The front of a 150/2 is flat, as shown, but the 150/1 is curved.  This also results in a fractionally longer chassis moulding on the 150/1, so the 150/2 body will not fit.

I haven't checked a 2014 150/1 chassis, but I think it's likely to share the same dimensional differences as the 2009 release.

Hope this helps somebody.

That’s interesting information Chris regarding the chassis moulding been different between the 150/1 and 150/2.

There are underframe equipment layout differences between the two sub classes as well.
