coombe junction - Moorswater goes it alone?...

Update - Bit of respite in France for a couple of weeks means a break from modelling...but still the mind keeps turning...

One of the things that came from Expo weekend Guinness fueled discussions and something I had also touched on in a previous post was the realisation that Board 3 could 'go it alone' and be a self contained layout. Granted, it's a only a run-a round-loop but it will contain a few signature ingredients of the layout, namely Moorswater dries and Moorswater viauduct.

The main inspiration being, that whereas Coombe Junction was rationalised in 1981 with track lifted and singled, besides a bit of overgrown vegetation, not much has changed at the dries/terminal since it changed from ECC China Clay to Blue Circle Cement - the buildings are perhaps a tad shabby and not so strewn in white dust, but the inlaid tracks remain and function as before. Coupled with the reminder of a few layouts in the modelling press where the scenery did not give many clues to the era, was partially the spark to break with my strictly BR Blue credentials and purchase a Bachfar 66 in Freightliner livery - Something more present day might also appeal to the latest generation of modellers.

The board could be run depicting class 25's on clay hoods, displaced by 37's, then Tigers replacing the hoods (any small suppliers reading wishing to introduce one of these would be very welcome ;)) then CDA's and finally 66's on PCA's.

A simple 500mm x 50mm rectangular cardboard box section to match height alignment, could allow the existing 6 x 500mm cassettes to plug in, each with its preformed train in place. Operations, whilst obviously limited to arrival, running around, rearranging a few wagons and then departing could be quite satisfying (I learnt that from the one day exhibition of the Kyle boxfile layout which was also pretty limited in operational scope)

Who knows, I guess one board is easier to fly back to the UK than 3 so perhaps it could act as a warm up to getting the whole layout to an exhibition. A small LCD screen adjacent to the layout could display images from the eras being depicted to help show the context.

A sketch of what I am rambling about is attached...perhaps I have drunk to much French rose...or not enough :P

I think it's a logical development of the concept and as a distraction it's not going to cause too much of an issue as the main board is still part of the larget layout :) Love the sketches!

James - Thanks - I think your right...for once I have a project within a project...same scale, same layout, same goals...here's to trying to stay focused!

I second the vote for Tigers... although it may hurt the wallet - a certain small supplier in Camborne does them in 4mm for the princely sum of 28 quid a time.

Makes the 2mm Association Presflo kit seem like a bargain.

I second the vote for Tigers...

I am not sure of their life span or widespread use apart from ECC...I assume the CDA's replaced them?...perhaps this is why no-one is keen to introduce one...shame...they look damn fine in 4mm on the Wheal Elizabeth layout on the forum...

Am getting great inspiration for my Coombe Junction project in 4mm at the end of Africa!

I might actually call it something like Moorswater as it will be a bit of what if, for example, some of the Caradon mines had stayed open a la Geevor.

This gives an opportunity for a bit more varied freight and makes it a bit more interesting operationally.

Jamieh - sounds good - your right about the limited operations...my freight consists of two rakes of clay hoods...if I bend the rules with the era I guess I could run a Chipman weedkiller train too...that's exciting as it gets for me at present

Tks for reply. My model (4mm) will keep the crossover near the bridge until the signal box was taken our in 1981. This will allow me to run freights for re forming in the Moorswater loop area and then say allow some fish or perishable traffic to go down the branch to Looe to also give interest.

Saw your version was on a 1900mm board, what length would you say would give a reasonable model to include the junction by the box?

Jamie - sorry - only just saw this post - When I mapped out the 4mm version on an IKEA shelf (my preferred baseboard but no connection etc ;) ) I was just using my sons 4mm setrack and points so it wasn't wholly accurate - I am sure you could squeeze the crossing in as well in that length but it might be best to lay it out with some paper track templates and place your rolling stock on it to gauge clearances/train lengths etc. Its also fun playing trains at that stage too and imagining the scenairio!

I have had to compromise/condense my 2FS version but it was only because I wanted to represent the parts which I felt for me, would capture an extract of the line.
