Operational musings - locomotives

I've just come back from the Three Spires show in Truro (Falmouth MRC), and we all had much fun operating 'Engine Wood'.

 

This was a very nice show, and friendly hosts, and there were some other nice layouts present as well. It was particularly good to have the chance to have a good look at the lovely 'Treneglos' and meet 2Manyspams and his colleagues!

 

I found myself admiring the operational discipline of the 'Treneglos' team, in terms of the fact that you only ever saw locos on their layout that would have worked the North Cornwall line. All the trains were also correctly formed.

 

This got me thinking about my own slightly more liberal motive power rostering policy on 'Engine Wood' and my other layouts too.

 

There's no shortage of published material about what locos worked on the S&D, both from the point of view of locomotive classes, and individual numbers too. The amount of material available in books and on the internet means it has never been easier to research the correct type and number for one's motive power choices, and indeed, I have ensured that most of my 'authentic' loco types have numbers appropriate to the S&D.

 

However, the 'slightly more liberal motive power' policy I mentioned above, means that I sometimes use other types of loco as well, in particular the use of diesels. We all know that the S&D closed in 1966, yet it amuses me to run green diesels too, sometimes in a 'diesel-only' operating sequence, sometimes mixed in with the steam locos.

 

My use of locos like the WD 2-8-0 is also a bit on the liberal side, and last weekend I also found myself enjoying seeing John Farmer's 45XX prairie tank working trains as well!

 

It occurs to me, that a goodly proportion of exhibition visitors will be non-enthusiasts, who wouldn't necessarily be able to tell the difference between an authentic loco and a non-authentic one. On the other hand, there are plenty of folk who will know!

 

On balance, I think I will keep the green diesels on the roster, because at the end of the day, it is my train set, and I think I'd prefer to run what gives me most pleasure.

 

Now then, should I weather that Robinson 04 and fit scale couplings to that next, or what about the Super D? I wonder if I could really get away with a Class 17?!!.... ;) :D

Keep your diesels Cap'n - they looked very nice in recent pics (but I do think a Beattie well tank might be going just a tad too far :blink: ).

I think the key point in the sellection of motive power is what claims you make for the layout and its operation. My preference is to see layouts operating credible combinations of stock, typical of the area and era modelled, but not slavish adherence to actual items used - unless, of course, the layout claims historical accuracy. In my view, this approach is equaly valid for both models of actual places and ficticious but typical locations.

As you probably know, my own layout is based on a real place, but I've altered history in the interests of greater operational potential. Hopefully, my sellection of stock/operations will have an air of credibility of the "yes, that could have happened" sort.

 

In the end, it's your layout and you can run what you like providing you are up front about it.

Cpt K, you have exactly the same issue as me, in running green diesels on a line which closed just prior to the otherwise inevitable influx of the oil burners.

 

I do restrict myself to types which were otherwise prevalent in the local area, and would doubtless have taken over from steam, had a more optimistic outlook been in force.

 

These liberties from the truth bother me from time to time, but I'm afraid I've too much of a soft spot for green BRCWs with white window surrounds, bodyside stripes and yellow panels to get rid of them completely.

I was thinking along very similar lines a few days back when you posted a batch of Engine Wood photos. My reaction to the photos was that while I chuckled at the "interlopers" and remembered past "justifications" of them, my inner purist was somehow far more satisfied with the photos of the durty black engines than the shiny green. And therein lies the dilemma.. I think I know what should have run on a fictional outpost of the S&D, but does Mr and Mrs Average Show Punter?

 

I must admit to being drawn to, and somewhat envious of, Jamie's self restraint in keeping things "typical" and plausible, if not strictly prototypical - that's what I've done when making an exhibition of myself in the past. However, behind closed doors IMTS applies... :D

I think this is pretty much in line with my presentation philosphy, which essentially revolves around the statement 'the most effective lies are those with a hint of the truth in them'.... ;) :lol:

Ah CK, you missed the ATSF 2-10-0 running on Treneglos on Saturday then and previously, for a bit of fun, we have had Class 50's, King Arthurs and some great western stuff. Oh, not forgetting the first Wadebridge where we had 3 different 34007's (Wadebridge) and a Bulleid Leader running at one point! :rolleyes: But, yes for the most point we do running prototypical locos and coach rakes, although the coaching mix isn't quite right yet as we're short of Bulleids. I think we've taken this approach because, having done the research, it always eats away when there's something not quite right, and of course there's always the exhibition punters who 'were there' to pull you up for errors. We did toy with the idea a while back of running the layout in a NSE period as though the line had survived....

 

But i did like the alternative, more liberal approach to on Engine Wood too. :D
