Flying Banana - Part XIII - And other things

Me again :)

I have some progress to report, both on Elvis and also the layout (believe it or not!).

Since the last posting about the banana I have finished of the painting. It has been varnished with a satin varnish and now I have made a start on the glazing.

I dont like that picture because it is a very cruel enlargement but it shows the paint and the glazing so far. The cab windows have been glazed with Microscale Micro Kristal Klear after a tip-off from Mark and Steve at the Oxford Group (thank you) and has come out alright (I think!). The sides have been glazed by more conventional methods of gluing clear plastic behind the windows. The black line was done (freehand) using a bow pen and trust me it looks alot better with the naked eye.

I have also made a start on the bogie sideframes. Alan D of Worsley Works kindly etched a set for me and he has done a very nice job of them too. They are simply layered up using the holes as guides and go together really easily (Thank you Alan).

I need to finish the other two, add some driveshafts, and then mount them onto the bogies but I am going to wait until I have the 2mm wheels first the make sure I get the clearances right.

Talking of clearances I have found a problem with the sideframes as once fitted they will foul the PCB that hold the LEDs for the lights. I will have to sit down and think of a solution to this which will probably mean pulling the LEDs and fibre optic guides apart from each end, not easy on a painted body!

FINALLY...

I have got half the layout out and set up ready to take a closer look at the trackwork!

As you can see the control panel collected quite a bit of dust whilst being stored for 6 months but its REALLY time I put some time into it. I have already added the cattle dock in its correct place (but not stuck down yet).

Impressive work as usual Missy. :)

I missed the earlier posts, what is the basis of your Railcar? Is it the Worsley Works etch or did you build it from scratch?

Elvis is looking good! Do you fancy doing the lining on my Mk.1 conversion? ;)

Elvis rocks Missy :D

Thanks for the tip re the liquid glass windows - will have to order some - I was previously put off by the sometimes milky effect that can be seen bu those look very clear and sharp - very nice!

Thank you. You are right, its the AEC Single Unit etch from Worsley Works.

I would love to help but as you might have noticed I am not the fastest of modellers plus I have quite a few things on my plate already! I am sure an accomplished modeller like yourself could do them no problems.

Elvis is certianly getting there!

I am pleased with the results of the glazing, in the past I have seen some dodgey results with the liquid stuff but this stuff seems to produce good results. Its never going to be as good as clear sheet but I am impressed.

excellent as always although I found Kristal clear can dry heavy unless you apply it to a level window how did you manage to get it so even?

whats the plan regarding the wheels wil you replace or turn down ?

Hehe, I was just kidding ;) Although you are much braver than me going down the bow pen route. Not sure my hand is steady enough for that!

Thanks guys :)

Good to see you have chosen a nice livery for Elvis.

Yes, far nicer than Brown!

Elvis looking good. I'm curious about the white fluffy stuff though. Is he on cloud 9?

Thanks Andy. No, its just me being a bit rubbish at controlling may camera (again!). Its actually light green grass, well that or some kind of omen?

Ahhh, my secret was to keep the window horizontal until the stuff went clear. I used a conbination of various props and blu-tack to achieve it. My plan right now is to replace the wheels with 2mm ones, I have heard thats its a pretty straightforward thing to do but as you know in 2mm land that can mean anything!

I know you were Tom ;). Trust me though there is a sheet of white plasticard somewhere here thats absolutely covered in thin black lines!

Lovely - that is a cruel close up but I think it goes to show how worthwhile it was spending time getting the shape of the cabs right - I know you spent hours over them and it looks wonderful. I never saw these units in the flesh, but comparing to black and white photographs you've got it pretty much spot on for me!

I have an old cast body banana somewhere it just couldn't be on the same layout as Elvis. Its the difference between a toy and a model. Great stuff as usual.

Magnificent work, as always Missy. Have watched the evolution of your cattle dock, and every time I get that one step closer to wanting to re-do mine. it just the fact that mine is 10 times bigger that is stopping me  .
