A brief round 'em up, head 'em out...

There wasn't really much to say about any one thing, so I thought I'd just put them all in a sort of hash. (No rude comments, please :))

I've not quite attached the front end. I had to trim a lot less off the body than I thought I'd have to, indeed I didn't have to slice it in half as I'd feared. [fast show]Which was nice. [/fast show]. I think I've got the height about right too. The one potential problem is that it's too narrow, but it could be worse.

The next job will be (ok, after stripping the paint) making the cuts needed to the back so that that fits.

Oh, and in case this becomes a bit too tricky, I've just managed to get a Minitrix A4 body. Though I may have to find an alternative use for that. I certainly hope I do...

I've got as far as applying the base coat to the grange. I'm hoping to get a bow pen soon. Actually, it's an attachment from a rotring compass... (and I'll have to buy the compass set to get it <_< ) And then I can apply the lining (it dazzles, it excites). I've got the name and number plates off.

With regard to the name, Derwent Grange isn't one of the ones that are available in N. OO yes, N no. I got a set of names and numbers for Manton Grange, so it may end up with that name instead. :(

The camera is horribly cruel at times. And it is in this case. This is the coach whose bogies gave me all the trouble with bearings going bye bye. It's an Ultima 50' Restaurant Car (LMS Period III Diagram 1912) and it's been fun to build... mostly. It's the first (brass) coach I've ever built. I had a go before in O, but only got as far as one bogie. This is the corridor side.

And this is the other side...

One question, how do you attach the bogies?

Edit: They're the LMS 9' bogies as sold by Ultima.

And this is the picture of the Mink C that I didn't manage to upload last time. It probably does need another coat..

That's a brass coach isn't it. If this is right solder a nut on the inside of the coach and then attach the bogies using bolts.

Thanks. I was wondering what to do, because it came with a pair of bolts with funny heads, that wouldn't fit through the bogies by quite a long way. I think the expectation was that they were supposed to self-tap into the pivot box. Then again, they may have been for anybody using Graham Farish bogies.

I'll take a bogie along and check some bolts out...

I may be wrong but the B17 looks like it needs that body moving back somewhat - the front overhang looks a bit large!

Hope that helps!

Please dont take this the wrong way but have you ever considered buying an airbrush? You can get away with brush painting in the larger scales but I think for N Gauge its really difficult to achieve a good finish. Trust me once you have used an airbrush you will never go back to brush painting or even using aerosols.

do you apply any undercoat before you brush paint? A cheap automotive spray/aerosol primer works wonders.

Have to agree with Missy here, once you go down the route of an airbrush, you won't want to come back. Admittedly it is a big outlay, compressor, airbrush, thinners, time spent cleaning up etc, etc. Fortunately for me, I've been using a mates for the past 5-6 years, we used to have annual spray days. Now that we live 1600km away, it’s not really doable. Last year Mrs Noswal bought me a compressor and accessory pack for my birthday. Now, not only can I paint when I want too, but I inflate tyres, blow-up toddlers pools (what used to take 45 min of hand-pumping is now 5min), and other husband like jobs requiring high pressure air! I know air-brushes are expensive, but try eBay, I got a cheap one, for starters, from Hong Kong, for only $2 plus $10 postage. What made it even better was that it was listed under the finger-nail art section. The same air-brush in the modelling section was $35! All you need to do is practise.

Yes, the front of the B17 is too far forward. There's a small clip on the chassis that needs to come off, and then it can move backwards. I was so relieved to get it at the right height that I took my eye off the... forwardness.

With regard to airbrushes... thanks for the advice. I'm going to have a look. I've tried them before, well, cheap ones that used cans of compressed air, and quite a while ago now. But yes, the pictures make the brush marks look very visible...

I know this is going to sound weird, but last night I was looking for something to use as weights, and I found a box of little bolts. While they were no use as weights... they are exactly the right size for attaching the bogies. Now I need to get some nuts. [Not in a Marathon sense :)] Which means I'll be getting on to Eileen's Emporium to get them. As well as some liquid lead. And some straight wire for the handrails. Hopefully .31 won't be too thick.
