No news is bad news..

Greetings.

I had intended by now to post the obligatory vidclip of an engine traversing my trackwork, but alas this has not yet happened!

In the limited time I've had over the last week, Ive unsoldered all feeds and disconnected all the point motors to try to track down short(s) which have prevented the above. :(

I am in the process of reconnecting and meter-testing and have now about 2/3 of the layout working.

Unfortunately, during a process of adding and changing power drops, I have made a bit of a mess of the trackwork, so a good deal of cleaning up will be needed before I put my camera on its tripod..

On the positive front, I received yeaterday my MR O-4-4T kit from Damien at 2mm Locomotives. It looks like a very good etch job actually, though I won't be attempting it just yet.

Coudn't believe how small the motor is!

Maybe I'll bump into you if you are at Ally Pally tomorrow.

Regards,

Chris

I know how you feel :( , having not removed jumpers from two Peco turnouts when i bonded the switch rails to the stock rails. Good luck on the rest of the layout.

I am visiting Ally Pally on Sunday, have a good day.

Some people find it easier to wire and test the track as they lay it. That way you know where the short is - its in the last bit you did. Professionals always test they get shorts too but find them and sort them out.

Hi Chris. Argh, that is one of the most annoying aspects of our hobby, fault-finding on trackwork! I hope you get it sorted soon.

Just had a look at the 2mm Locomotive website. Not being a 2mm modeller I had not seen their website before but they've chosen some lovely prototypes for their kits. Which of the two O-4-4s versions will you be doing?

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Johnson 1P kit as it will be very interesting to compare with the 4mm one that I've been building. I also wondered about the two kits. They must be very carefully designed if they manage to capture the fairly small dimensional differences between an 1833 and a 2228 in a 2mm model.

Been there...done that...and am still doing that

Don't worry Chris - Even with the most simplist wiring, it sometimes requires disconnecting everything and doing it again one by one.

I had this on my boxfile layout last year (all my layouts seem to only have two turnouts) and I even managed to mess that up. Only by starting and testing everything bit by bit again did it flush out the problem.

Hang on in there...it will pay dividends in the long run...

Mikkel,

I will be doing a round boilered version, though I have yet to get to grips with the exact differences between prototypes. I have the Wild Swan publication and need to study it before I go near the kit.

Don, I went into this with what I thought a very simple circuit, but the truth has been very different - definitely a long way from being a profesional, though it has not been so bad dis/reconnecting so far. I have already found two iffy joints though!!

The suggestion of testing bit by bit is too obvious and easy for me to have considered it in the first place, perhaps! I have certainly learned the value of a meter though.

Fingers crossed it will be sorted this week, then I can get on with the enjoyable task of ballasting.
