Blog Restart! Building Bridges in N and T gauges

Hi All,

it has been a while since I posted a thing here, but due to an unusually quiet weekend.... some progress!

Firstly, Victoria Bridge in N....

Using a pillar drill with a 2mm drill bit, I finally got around to creating the precision holes for the structural toothpicks...

However, the holes have turned out rather too precise, the toothpicks fit too snugly into the holes and make it impossible to slide the bridge parts to the right spacing... or at least not without bending of toothpicks, buckling of bridges and stabbing of fingers! Next step, use the drill to tease the holes out a little, so that the toothpicks fit, but can slide!

Also, whilst pondering bridges.. found a plastic viaduct in a bag of N gauge bits picked up from a sale a while back. The bag of bits was purchased as it was going for a good price, and contained some useful wagons. The viaduct had a length of N gauge track set into the top of it, but was massively undersized (at least comapared to all the viaducts I have ever encountered).. so it went in the drawer with all the other potentially useful 'stuff'.

Mmmmm.... maybe at 1:450 scale... beginning to think of T gauge Cornish branch lines again!

Could be fun!

resist resist resist

That Victoria bridge looks great - did you etch it?

Watching the T gauge with interest (for a friend you understand)

Oh yes, the IKEA shelf stacking friend :P

(do pass on my regards to Sven when you next see him!)

Victoria Bridge is 100% lasercut thin (3mm) MDF, and some details laser cut from card. I reckon stippled with a bit of textured paint, it will give a good impression of vintage ironwork.

Hi Will.

All Looking good! Perhaps a light rub with some fine wet & dry on the toothpicks might ease the tight fit?

Also that Vidaduct & the T gauge stuff certainly has that Moorswater Viaduct look about it :D

Tom.
