Update on 1F

I was beginning to wonder whether I should stick with N gauge after my recent experiences with 2mm FS.

But the I took out a piece of code 55 and immediately returned it to its box.

Now I understand why it is called the Dark Side.

There really isn't any going back, is there?! :O

As Don pointed out earlier, fitting gearboxes to spit frame chassis is not for the faint-harted.

I have certainly had to conclude that gearboxes and me don't mix very well - perhaps I would need to extend my knowledge of milling; and even then there remains the probem of how to isolate everything.

So I took the decision, after due consideration, to attach one gear directly to the chassis, modifying it accordingly, so that the motor could sit lower and require less routing out of the internal brasswork.

The photo pretty well shows all.

Until the next time.

Chris

Edited to include this photo which pretty well brings things right up to date - not worth a new post.

The chassis has been placed on the track and power applied to check there was no shorting - looks ok so far.

Nope...why would you want to? ;)

That chassis looks great Chris....it still remains a goal for me to one day build something myself from scratch - stick with it...it'll all turn out fine I'm sure.

I think that was a wise descision Chris. Your workmansip looks fine to me I would be pleased to do it as good as that. The problem is the space between the frames is tight anyway finding room for the gearbox sides plus clearance adds extra problems. Maybe something to come back to. Regarding wear perhaps you could expoxy a thin brass washer on the inside of the frames. As long as it touched nothing else it would be electrically dead. Just an idea not one I have tried.

I admire your persistence Chris.Seems like a wise decision to move ahead rather than getting bogged down and stalling the project. Thanks for the continued narrative on this project, good to learn from.

Hi Chris,

Glad to see you persevered, looks a lovely little loco and a sweet running chassis on 2FS track is just so much better imho. Looking forward to seeing it completed.

Regards

Tom
