N gauge interlude..

Greetings.

I felt I needed a little break from the rigours of 2mmFS, to work on something more footloose and free.

I have had this little baseboard section lying around in the garage for some time, and I always had a fondness for it - it resembles some weird futuristic instrument in shape!

As I was coincidentally wondering what to do with my N gauge bits and bobs, I decided to put the two together and create a little shunting plank based on an industrial wharf to simple fiddle yard.

The plan is no complicated point motors or wiring; one engine to do pretty much all ( though I wouldn't be surprised to see my B1 turning up to put in an occasional shift); trucks only, and in that respect I wanted to include a wagon turntable, again this would be hand turned. The points would be operated by little levers at the side of the track, as would be likely in real life.

So, a quick search of my old boxes revealed 2 yards of Code 55 and 3 short radius points left. Ideal.

Here is the plan I decided on:

As you can see it is small and simple, with goods in /goods out being the sole point of it.

No reversing loops, simple back and forth movements.

Buildings are to be sourced cheaply wherever, or modified ones I l aready have lying around.

Motive power, the GF Open cab Jinty or a Dapol Ivatt; late 1950's.

Last night I used double sided tape to secure the track, and knocked together a simple turntable, which made out of easitrac rail and Slaters wood sheet, sits in a plastic cap off a milk container!

The yard surface will be covered with the 4mm sets plasticard which is no use in 2mmFS, but still looks good here. It is cut but not attached as yet in the pictures.

Nowt like a distraction is there?

;)

I'll give updates on this from time to time.

Be careful with that double sided tape. My local club used it for a Z gauge layout. When I came towire it up I found that the track had tried to straighten producing doglegs at the joins.

Sweet and simple, Chris. I know what you mean by the need for simplicity and "footloose" sometimes, it can be so relaxing. The hands-on (literally) operating principle of the turntable and point levers is interesting. Sometimes maybe we shouldn't be so afraid of the big hand from the sky, as it can actually add interest in some cases. How do you plan to make the levers operational?

Thanks for the warning Don. I think the robustness of the code 55 may help in that respect! I certainly wouldn't consider it for easitrac which is way too flimsy. The sooner I get some ballast down then the better I think. The yard cobbles sheets have now been glued to wooden sections of sleeper height and again to the sleepers themselves so hopefully that area will be fine.

I have already been able to do a bit of shunting, such is the speed and ease of assembly of this litte project!

I have an idea to construct some simple little point levers, which can be operated with tweezers - I have left the springs in the points for this purpose.

To be honest, this is a FUN project, and I do not intend getting too bogged down in technical details - I get enough of that with 2mm!

I will however use it as an experiment in the scenic side, because this is something I really do need to work on!
